Chapter 6 - Lucian’s Brother Never Left the House

Victor Moretti had died nine years earlier.

No interrogation possible.

No confrontation.

Only records.

Lucian spent the next two days tearing through old archives.

Not literally.

Emma made him promise.

They used attorneys, accountants, archived phones and warehouse files.

Eventually they found a payment.

Eleven years ago.

Thirty thousand dollars.

To a security contractor named Harold Finch.

Date:

Two days before Daniel Carter died.

Finch was alive.

Retired.

Living in Maine.

Lucian wanted to send men.

Emma wanted police.

Compromise:

Lucian’s attorney arranged a voluntary interview with a retired investigator present.

Finch broke in twenty minutes.

Victor Moretti had hired him to scare Daniel.

Not kill him.

The instructions:

Take Daniel’s files.

Destroy copies.

Make him stop investigating.

Finch cornered Daniel in a parking garage.

Daniel fought back.

He ran.

Finch chased.

Daniel reached his car and drove.

Finch followed.

High speed.

Wet road.

Daniel lost control.

Crash.

Dead.

Not intended murder.

Still caused by Victor’s decision.

Emma listened to the recorded confession twice.

Then turned it off.

Lucian stood across the room.

“I’m sorry.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You didn’t do it.”

“My father did.”

“You’re not your father.”

His face changed.

People probably told him the opposite his entire life.

She continued.

“But your family buried it.”

“Yes.”

“And you benefited from the silence.”

“Yes.”

No excuses.

That helped.

Emma’s mother received the truth privately before authorities reopened Daniel’s case.

Margaret Carter cried for three hours.

Emma could not.

Not yet.

Father Paul faced charges related to stalking, drugging, unlawful surveillance, conspiracy and evidence tampering.

But one mystery remained.

Why was the succession file being assembled?

Paul was not capable of taking over the Moretti organization.

He was a priest with old loyalties.

Someone else wanted Lucian removed.

Paul refused to name them.

Then Marco found something inside Daniel Moretti’s hidden bedroom.

A recent food wrapper.

Not old.

Three days old.

Someone else had been using the room.

The hidden suite connected not only to Lucian’s closet and west corridor.

A third passage led beneath the east wing.

To a sealed basement.

They opened it.

A mattress.

Portable lights.

Canned food.

A laptop.

Someone had been living inside the estate.

For months.

Emma felt sick.

“How could no one know?”

Lucian answered:

“Because everyone thought the basement ended at the wine cellar.”

Inside the laptop were surveillance feeds.

Every camera.

Every hallway.

Emma’s bedroom.

Lucian’s office.

Teresa’s kitchen.

They had been watched constantly.

Then Marco found photographs.

A man.

Older than Lucian.

Gray hair.

Heavy beard.

Different angles.

Lucian stared at him.

Impossible recognition.

Emma noticed.

“Who?”

Lucian sat down.

“My brother.”

Emma froze.

“I thought you were an only child.”

“Everyone does.”

Lucian’s older half-brother, Adrian Moretti, supposedly died twenty-two years earlier.

Age twenty-six.

Boat explosion off Cape Cod.

Body never recovered.

Lucian had been nineteen.

Their relationship had been terrible.

Adrian believed he should inherit.

Victor favored Lucian.

After the explosion, Lucian became sole heir.

“You think he survived?”

Lucian pointed at one image.

A scar behind the man’s ear.

“I gave him that scar when I was fourteen.”

Adrian was alive.

And had been living behind Lucian’s walls.

Everything changed again.

Father Paul laughed when confronted.

“You finally found him.”

Lucian stepped toward him.

“Why?”

“Because Adrian is Lorenzo’s true heir.”

“Lorenzo was his grandfather too.”

“He thinks like him.”

That was the point.

Adrian believed Victor corrupted the family by choosing Lucian.

He spent decades in hiding, building relationships with old loyalists.

He returned when Lucian began converting more Moretti operations into legitimate businesses.

To Adrian, that was betrayal.

The succession folder was his takeover plan.

Emma had been used to move information because Adrian could not risk appearing on modern cameras.

But if Adrian lived inside the estate, why need Emma?

Because some biometric locks required current staff access items.

Emma moved keys and cards between secure areas.

Adrian copied them from the hidden room.

Then returned them before morning.

“Where is he now?” Lucian asked.

No answer.

The basement was empty.

But the final camera recording showed Adrian leaving at 4:06 a.m. the morning Father Paul was captured.

He carried one bag.

Before disappearing through an old storm tunnel, he looked directly into the hidden camera.

Then spoke.

No audio.

Emma read his lips.

Fourteen sleeps.

Her stomach dropped.

Adrian had built the conditioning script.

Not Paul.

Not Teresa.

He knew exactly how many nights remained.

Until what?

They returned to Paul’s records.

The succession timeline.

Phase Four.

September 17.

Tomorrow.

A major Moretti council dinner.

Every captain.

Every business head.

Every loyalist in one room.

Adrian did not plan to kill Lucian alone.

He planned to replace him publicly.

And Emma suddenly remembered something from her sleepwalking trance.

“Fourteen sleeps.”

Lucian looked at her.

“What?”

“I said Daniel told me I could go home after fourteen sleeps.”

“Yes.”

“What if Daniel wasn’t the trigger for me?”

“Then what?”

Emma looked toward the chapel.

“Maybe it was the name of the plan.”

In Daniel Moretti’s old notebook, Marco found a phrase written repeatedly:

DANIEL PROTOCOL — 14 DAYS

The original conditioning experiment on Anna had lasted fourteen days.

Adrian had copied it exactly.

Tomorrow was Emma’s fourteenth night.

Whatever final task Anna had once been trained to perform—

Adrian intended Emma to perform it too.
