Chapter 9 - Healing the Broken Foundations

Over the next three weeks, St. Jude’s Hospital became our private sanctuary.
Under the continuous care of top specialists, Maya’s incision healed completely, the infection was eradicated, and her strength returned fully.
Liam thrived, gaining healthy weight and sleeping peacefully through the night in his nursery suite.
During those three weeks, I never left their side.
I brought my laptop to the hospital room, managing my business holdings while sitting beside Maya’s bed. We talked for hours—about our past, our fears, and the future we wanted to build together.
For the first time in our marriage, there were no secrets, no toxic mother-in-law whispering poisons in my ear, and no fear lingering in the shadows.
On a crisp Tuesday morning in late January, Dr. Harrison entered the room with a wide smile and a stack of discharge papers.
"Mrs. Vance," Dr. Harrison said cheerfully, "you and young Liam are officially cleared to go home."
Maya looked at me, a tiny flicker of nervousness in her eyes. "Where are we going, David? Back to the Brooklyn apartment?"
I smiled, taking her hand and helping her stand up. "No. That apartment has too many dark memories. We're going somewhere new."
We took a private car out of Manhattan, driving north toward the scenic coast of Connecticut.
An hour later, the car pulled through a set of private wooden gates, winding down a driveway lined with snow covered pine trees.
At the end of the driveway stood a breathtaking, modern stone manor overlooking the blue waters of Long Island Sound.
It had floor to ceiling glass windows, a warm wraparound wooden porch, and smoke drifting lazily from a massive stone chimney.
"David..." Maya gasped, stepping out of the car and looking up at the stunning house. "What is this?"
"This is our new home," I said, holding her close while Viktor carried a sleeping Liam in his car seat behind us. "I sold the old Greenwich estate and bought this place two weeks ago. It's registered entirely in your name, Maya."

Tears glistened in her eyes as she looked at me. "My name?"
"Yours and Liam's," I whispered, kissing her temple. "No one can ever threaten your home again."
