Chapter 7 - The Letter He Forced Her to Write

The letter was found in Daniel’s desk.
Not Claire’s handwriting.
Not fully.
It began in her hand, then shifted into typed lines.
A script.
A trap.
To whom it may concern,
My sister Maya Bennett has become obsessed with my marriage. She uses her position as a police officer to intimidate my husband and interfere in our private life. I have never been afraid of Daniel. Any injuries I have had were accidental or caused by my own emotional instability.
Claire remembered writing the first paragraph.
Daniel stood over her.
He made her copy the words after the April call.
He said if she ever reached out to me, he would file the letter with my department and accuse me of abusing authority.
Then he added typed pages himself.
Claims that I threatened him.
Claims that I encouraged Claire to lie.
Claims that Claire had “episodes.”
Claims that Daniel feared for his safety.
He had not been trying only to keep Claire quiet.
He had been preparing to discredit the first person she would call.
Me.
That should have made me angry.
It did.
But beneath the anger was something sharper.
Respect for Claire’s courage.
She called anyway.
At 3:07 a.m., after months of isolation, after Daniel made my badge sound dangerous, after a police report had already failed her once, she still called.
She did not fail.
The system did.
And then she tried again.
That mattered.
At Daniel’s bond hearing, his attorney argued he was a respected financial planner with deep community ties and no prior convictions.
Sergeant Crane presented the letter.
The blue folder.
The altered report.
The broken phone.
The neighbor’s notebook.
The dead line from 3:07.
The judge denied easy release.
Daniel looked back at Claire as deputies led him away.
May you like
For once, she did not look down.
