Chapter 10 - A New Empire

One year later.

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in New York City was bathed in golden light from crystal chandeliers.

The High Council of the Eastern Syndicate sat surrounding an enormous round mahogany table—twelve powerful leaders who controlled shipping lines, banking networks, and territories across the continent.

Sitting at the head of the table was Damon Volkov, dressed in an immaculate charcoal tuxedo, looking every bit the most formidable man in America.

And sitting right beside him, wearing a breath-taking emerald velvet gown with a diamond tiara resting upon my styled dark curls, was me.

Alina Romanov-Volkov.

The room fell into respectful silence as Damon stood up, placing a firm, warm hand on my shoulder.

"One year ago," Damon's deep, powerful voice carried across the hall, "certain members of this council believed they could wipe out the Romanov bloodline and steal our territories through betrayal and cowardice. They failed."

He motioned toward the heavy doors at the back of the hall, where two guards stood watch.

"Today, the Romanov and Volkov empires are unified under one crown," Damon continued, looking down at me with a soft, affectionate warmth that was reserved for my eyes only. "Any threat against my wife is a declaration of war against the entire Volkov syndicate."

The council members nodded solemnly, raising their crystal glasses in a silent toast of submission and respect.

After the official proceedings ended, the hall filled with soft classical music.

Damon led me out onto the private balcony overlooking Central Park. The cool autumn air was crisp, carrying the soft rustle of golden leaves below.

"You handled those council lords like you've been doing it your whole life," Damon murmured softly, pulling me close to his chest, wrapping his arms around my waist.

"I had a very good teacher," I smiled, resting my head back against his shoulder. "Though I still think your speech was a bit dramatic."

Damon let out a soft, low chuckle against my hair. "A mob boss has to maintain his reputation, Alina."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, familiar object, placing it in my hand.

It was the faded photograph from seven years ago—the picture of sixteen-year-old me at the Boston orphanage. But now, it was set inside a beautifully crafted platinum frame, protected and preserved forever.

"I carried this in my pocket every single day before I found you," Damon said softly, his voice rich with deep emotion. "I promised your father on his deathbed that I would protect you. But I never imagined that in protecting you... I would find my own salvation."

I turned in his arms, looking up into those stormy gray eyes that had once frightened me, but now felt like the safest place in the entire world.

"You saved me from the dark, Damon," I whispered, sliding my hands up his chest to cup his jaw. "Now we rule it together."

May you like

Damon smiled—a warm, radiant smile that belonged only to me—and leaned down, pressing his lips against mine in a long, sweet, passionate kiss under the shimmering stars of New York.

The maid who had once tried to stay invisible was gone forever. In her place stood a queen, loved beyond measure by the king who had given everything to keep her safe.
