Chapter 6 - Lorenzo Put a Price on the Woman Dean Wouldn’t Surrender

Fiona was being held in an abandoned bridal warehouse.

The cruelty of location almost made her laugh later.

At the time, she was tied to chair surrounded by white dresses while Marco Bellini paced with gun.

Megan saw through video call.

“I'm coming.”

Dean grabbed phone after call ended.

“No.”

She stared.

“Do not start.”

“He wants you alone.”

“He wants box.”

“He wants both.”

“Yes.”

“And you think I'm letting you walk in?”

“Letting.”

He closed eyes.

Wrong word.

Megan softened slightly.

“Dean, I am terrified.”

That got him.

“I don't want to do this. I want you to handle it because you're better at violence than anyone I've ever met.”

“Compliment accepted.”

“But Fiona is there because of me.”

“No. Because of Marco.”

“Yes, but I can't hide while she pays.”

Dean looked away.

Then:

“We build plan around your choice.”

Exactly.

They created replica box.

Real flash drive copied and delivered to federal prosecutor through Julian's attorney. Why suddenly feds? Julian wanted immunity/cooperation. Good.

Dante planted tracker in replica lining.

Megan wore discreet microphone.

No gun.

Her choice.

She didn't know how to use one well.

Dean would remain two blocks away.

He hated every foot.

At warehouse, Marco opened door.

Megan entered carrying box.

White wedding gowns hung like ghosts.

Fiona sat bound but alive.

Her eyes widened.

“You idiot.”

Megan almost cried.

“Nice to see you too.”

Marco smiled.

“Blue Jade box.”

“Fiona first.”

“No.”

“Then no box.”

“You think you have leverage?”

Megan set box on floor, foot on top.

“You kill me, Dean burns every person you know.”

Marco's jaw tightened.

“He'll try.”

“He’s very motivated.”

Fiona:

“She’s not exaggerating. The man has issues.”

Marco laughed.

Then another man emerged.

Lorenzo.

Megan's stomach dropped.

He had Luca's face.

For second she saw night.

Gun.

Hands.

Blood.

Lorenzo noticed.

“You remember him when you look at me.”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He walked closer.

“You killed my brother.”

“No.”

His expression sharpened.

“Dean filled your head?”

“I know Luca survived my bullet.”

Tiny change.

So true.

“Julian saw you leave.”

Lorenzo smiled.

“Julian will say anything to save himself.”

“Autopsy will show two wounds.”

“We controlled body.”

“Not anymore.”

That was bluff? Dean recovered body. Yes.

Forensics through independent examiner had confirmed two bullets: Megan's lower abdomen, Lorenzo's heart shot.

Lorenzo's face went cold.

Megan:

“You killed him.”

“He betrayed family.”

“He tried stopping you from trafficking people.”

“He stole from us.”

“People aren't inventory.”

Lorenzo snapped:

“Do you know what families like ours survive by?”

“No. And I don't care.”

He approached.

“You should. You're standing behind Russo now.”

“No.”

That startled.

“I am standing beside Dean because I choose to. That is not same thing.”

Marco grew impatient.

“Box.”

Megan kicked it forward.

Marco opened.

Replica documents.

Drive.

Tracker.

He smiled.

Then Fiona said:

“You should check bottom.”

Megan almost turned.

What?

Marco did.

A red blinking light.

Fiona laughed.

“Your hostage situation has terrible quality control.”

Marco swore.

Gunfire outside.

Not Dean's men initially.

Federal tactical team coordinated through Julian? Good.

Lorenzo grabbed Megan.

Gun to neck.

“Call them off.”

“I can't.”

“You came wired.”

“Yes.”

He struck microphone away.

Fiona screamed.

Marco dragged Fiona upright.

Chaos.

Lorenzo pulled Megan toward loading dock.

She remembered Luca.

His hand around wrist.

Her panic.

This time she didn't reach for gun.

She stomped Lorenzo's foot, twisted body, drove shoulder backward.

Not enough to defeat him.

Enough to shift muzzle.

Shot hit ceiling.

Dean appeared at far entrance despite plan.

Of course.

He aimed.

Lorenzo used Megan as shield.

“Drop it, Russo.”

Dean didn't.

Megan saw his eyes.

Not king.

Boy bleeding at Blue Jade.

Afraid.

She whispered:

“Trust me.”

Dean's jaw moved.

Then he lowered gun.

Lorenzo laughed.

“Love makes men stupid.”

Megan:

“No. Control does.”

She let knees collapse suddenly.

Lorenzo lost human shield.

Dean fired—not at Lorenzo's head, but weapon hand.

Gun dropped.

Federal agents surged.

Marco attempted run.

Dante tackled.

Fiona kicked Marco while agents cuffed him.

“That's for ruining bridal inventory.”

Megan sat on concrete shaking.

Dean came but stopped a few feet away.

He didn't touch.

“May I?”

Two words.

She nodded.

Then he knelt and wrapped arms around her.

Not possession.

Not claim.

She pressed face against chest.

Safe.

But this time safety wasn't lie.

Because she had chosen it.

Lorenzo was arrested.

Marco arrested.

Julian surrendered cooperation evidence.

The criminal war Dean expected never happened.

Instead, investigators began dismantling trafficking network through warrants, financial seizures and testimony.

But one thing remained unresolved.

A public bounty had been posted anonymously for Megan before warehouse operation.

$2 million.

Lorenzo claimed it wasn't his.

Marco denied.

Both could lie.

Then Nina traced crypto transfer.

Originating account belonged to Russo Holdings Internal Security Reserve.

Dean's own money.

Someone inside his organization had funded Megan's death.

Not Marco.

He didn't have authority.

Only three people did.

Dean.

Dante.

And Dean's longtime legal adviser, Victor Hale.

Dante stared.

Dean went silent.

Victor Hale had been beside Dean since father's funeral.

He had drafted trusts.

Negotiated territory.

Approved Marco's hiring nine years earlier.

And suddenly Dean realized Marco might never have infiltrated his house alone.

The betrayal wasn't one soldier.

May you like

It was architecture.
