Chapter 2

My voice sounded unfamiliar even to me.
Lauren turned around quickly.
For a moment her expression hardened, but it changed almost instantly when she saw who had entered the room.
“Emerson,” she said softly, her tone shifting with practiced ease. “You’re home early.”
I stepped forward and lifted Sofia gently into my arms.
Her body felt far lighter than it should have, and when I touched her hands I realized they were cold despite the warm afternoon outside.

“What is happening here?” I asked quietly.
Lauren exhaled with visible frustration.
“She refuses to eat properly,” she explained. “I’m trying to help her develop better habits because you are never home long enough to see how difficult it is.”
I kept my eyes on my daughter.
“Don’t talk about her that way,” I said calmly.
Lauren crossed her arms.
Then she delivered the sentence she clearly believed would end the argument.
“I’m pregnant.”
For a moment the room was silent.
Then I carried Sofia out of the shed without another word.
The Camera Footage
That evening, after Sofia had fallen asleep in her room, I went to the study where the security monitor system had been installed years earlier, though I rarely checked it because I believed our home was a safe place.
The system stored recordings from several cameras placed around the property.
Including the garden.
I opened the footage from earlier that afternoon.
The video showed Lauren leading Sofia across the yard.
My daughter resisted slightly, shaking her head while clutching her notebook, but Lauren pulled her forward by the wrist with visible irritation.
The camera recorded everything clearly.
Lauren opened the shed door.
She pushed Sofia inside.
Then she locked the door from the outside.
Inside the dim shed, another camera captured something that made my hands go still on the desk.
Sofia had knelt on the dusty floor and used her finger to write a single word in the thin layer of dirt.
HELP.
She stared at the door for several minutes afterward.
Waiting.
The room felt impossibly quiet as the video ended.
The Truth Begins To Surface
The next morning I began speaking to people who had been trying to warn me for months without success.
Our housekeeper, Maria Alvarez, hesitated before showing me an audio recording she had secretly saved after hearing Lauren shouting at Sofia several weeks earlier.
The recording contained threats and cruel words that I could barely believe were spoken inside my home.
Later that afternoon I visited Sofia’s school.

Her teacher opened a file filled with notes documenting concern about my daughter’s sudden weight loss, her fear of returning home at the end of the day, and the repeated attempts the school had made to contact me during business trips that had never reached my attention.
I realized then that Lauren had intercepted the messages.
