Chapter 2 - The Man Who Thought Humiliation Was Entertainment

At the hospital, a nurse cleaned the scratches along Anna’s scalp.
The cut itself was uneven but not medically serious.
The humiliation was harder to measure.
Every time Anna closed her eyes, she heard laughter.
Not only Julian’s.
The soft laughter of people who wanted his approval.
The quick laughter of women who feared becoming the next target.
The nervous laughter of executives who knew the Valentis controlled promotions, contracts, invitations, and careers.
Matteo sat beside her without telling her how to feel.
That mattered.
He did not call her brave.
Did not tell her hair would grow back.
Did not say Julian had made a mistake.
He simply remained there.
When the nurse left, Anna touched the jagged ends near her shoulder.
“I looked ridiculous.”
“No.”
“They recorded me crying.”
“You were assaulted in front of a crowd.”
“I should have stood up.”
“You were on the floor because he forced you there.”
She looked toward him.
“You bought their debt.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“The closing documents were completed at four twenty this afternoon.”
“The party started at seven.”
“Yes.”
“You knew before we arrived.”
“I knew the family was in financial trouble.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
Matteo understood.
“I knew I would probably control the company by tomorrow.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Confidentiality.”
“You’re my husband.”
“That does not make you exempt from securities restrictions.”
Anna looked away.
The answer was correct.
It still hurt.
The Valenti family had mocked her all evening while Matteo carried a secret that could have changed how she understood the room.
“I felt alone.”
“I know.”
“You were supposed to arrive with me.”
“I was delayed by the final lender call.”
“I thought you were avoiding the dinner.”
“I should have found another way to tell you I would be late.”
That was an apology Anna could use.
Specific.
No excuses disguised as explanation.
She nodded.
Then asked the question that had been growing since the ballroom.
“Did you buy the company because of me?”
“No.”
Relief and disappointment arrived together.
Matteo continued.
“I bought the debt because Valenti Crown has valuable assets, terrible governance, and four thousand employees at risk.”
“And now?”
“Now Julian’s assault changes how aggressively I protect the existing leadership.”
Anna studied him.
“You were going to let them stay?”
“Some of them.”
“Celeste?”
“As ceremonial chair without operational authority.”
“Dominic?”
“Possibly chief executive during transition.”
“Julian?”
“No.”
“Even before tonight?”
“Julian had already been moving company money through personal accounts.”
Anna stared.
“You knew he was stealing?”
“We suspected.”
Julian’s cruelty in the ballroom had not created the Valenti family’s collapse.
It had exposed the character behind existing financial abuse.
The police took Anna’s statement.
Her dress, stained with champagne and hair, was photographed.
Julian was charged with assault.
Because he used scissors near her neck and forcibly restrained her head, prosecutors considered additional charges.
His attorney called before midnight with an offer.
Public apology.
Payment for medical care.
A luxury salon appointment.
A charitable donation.
In exchange, Anna would describe the incident as a misunderstanding and avoid supporting criminal prosecution.
Anna laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because the insult was so complete.
They believed the remedy for public humiliation was expensive grooming.
“No.”
Her attorney, Lila Barnes, confirmed:
“You want to reject it?”
“Yes.”
Julian’s lawyer tried again the next morning.
He increased the offer.
One million dollars.
Confidential.
Anna had grown up in a two-bedroom apartment in the Bronx.
Her mother cleaned offices at night.
Her father drove buses.
One million dollars could change their lives.
Julian knew that.
Or believed he did.
Anna held the proposal for several minutes.
Then placed it on the table.
“He thinks my price is lower because I was poor.”
Lila said nothing.
“He thinks that because I married Matteo, money became the language I understand.”
“What do you understand?”
“That if I sign this, every person in that ballroom learns he was right.”
She rejected the offer.
By noon, video of the assault leaked online.
One of Julian’s friends posted a short clip before police ordered preservation.
The video began after Anna was already on the floor.
It showed her crying.
Julian laughing.
Then Matteo entering.
Headlines called it a billionaire revenge drama.
No article mentioned that Anna had called emergency services herself.
Online comments praised Matteo for rescuing her.
Some asked why she did not fight back.
Others debated whether the haircut was serious enough for criminal charges.
Anna read three comments and closed the app.
She refused to become a public argument about how perfectly a woman must react to assault.
Then a second video appeared.
This one came from a waiter’s phone.
It began earlier.
Julian grabbed Anna’s hair after she said:
“Your mother can carry her own purse.”
He pulled her backward.
Celeste laughed before the scissors appeared.
Dominic watched from across the room.
He did not intervene.
The video changed public reaction.
But it also changed Matteo’s acquisition strategy.
He called an emergency board meeting for Valenti Crown Holdings.
The company’s lenders had already appointed him enforcement representative.
Until debt conditions were resolved, he could suspend executives tied to asset misuse or conduct that created material liability.
Julian was removed immediately.
Celeste’s spending authority was frozen.
Dominic remained temporarily.
Then the forensic accountants opened the books.
Within six hours, they found something no one expected.
Payments to a private intelligence firm.
The firm had investigated Matteo.
His company.
His marriage.
Anna’s parents.
Her previous employment.
Her immigration records, though she was born in New York.
And a file labeled:
RODRIGUEZ LEVERAGE.

The Valentis had not invited Anna to the party merely to humiliate her.
They had been preparing to use her against Matteo before he acquired their empire.
