Chapter 4 - The Girl Cassandra Left Behind
Mia Foster entered the Vale story carrying a purple backpack and refusing to release her adoptive mother’s hand.
Marcus met the family at Detective Ruiz’s office.
Mia’s parents, Hannah and Joel Foster, were public-school teachers.
They had adopted Mia when she was eighteen months old.
Until Cassandra appeared at the school, Mia believed her biological mother was dead.
“We never lied,” Hannah said. “We told her we did not know where Cassandra was.”
Mia looked at Marcus.
“Did she hurt Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I am still trying to understand.”
“Will she hurt me?”
“No,” Marcus said.
Detective Ruiz corrected him gently.
“We are doing everything possible to keep you safe.”
Marcus understood.
Promises should not exceed reality.
Lily met Mia later under Dr. Bell’s supervision.
The girls sat on opposite sides of a table.
Mia noticed Lily’s fox drawing.
“You like foxes?”
“My mom drew them.”
“My mom left me a rabbit.”
Neither girl called Cassandra “Mom” after that.
They began drawing together.
Lily drew windows in her houses again.
Mia drew locks.
The deposit box was opened under police supervision.
Inside were original patent notebooks belonging to Daniel Vale.
There were also letters he wrote to Cassandra before his death.
Daniel knew the company stole his work.
But his final letters did not demand revenge.
One read:
Cassie, do not let what they did become the only thing you inherit from me.
Cassandra had ignored it.
The box contained something else.
A cassette recorder.
Daniel had secretly recorded a meeting with Victor’s father and Marcus’s grandfather.
They admitted removing his name from the patents.
They offered money for silence.
Daniel refused.
Then Victor’s father threatened Cassandra, who was ten years old at the time.
The recording explained Daniel’s fear.
It also proved Cassandra was a victim before she became an abuser.
Marcus felt compassion for the child she had been.
Not for the woman who tormented Lily.
The final item in the box was a list of chemical suppliers.
Daniel had researched compounds capable of disrupting cardiac function without obvious evidence.
At first, investigators feared Daniel had planned revenge.
Then they noticed dates.
The list was created after Daniel developed heart symptoms.
He suspected someone was poisoning him.
Daniel died in 2009 from a heart attack.
His physician was Dr. Samuel Rourke’s father.
The same family connected to Anna’s death.
The conspiracy crossed generations.
Victor had not merely joined Cassandra for money.
His family had helped silence Daniel.
Cassandra knew.
She partnered with Victor because each held evidence against the other.
Victor promised access to Vale Technologies.
Cassandra promised not to expose his father.
Their alliance depended on mutual blackmail.
Owen Price contacted Marcus through an encrypted email.
He claimed Cassandra had forced him to help.
She knew Owen had stolen company data years earlier and threatened prison.
He offered Cassandra’s location in exchange for immunity.
Police rejected full immunity but agreed to consider cooperation.
Owen revealed a mountain cabin outside Bend, Oregon.
A tactical team arrived.
The cabin was empty.
But they found plans.
Cassandra intended to stage Marcus’s suicide.
She had obtained medication, forged a note, and scheduled a fake email confessing to Anna’s murder.
After Marcus’s death, Victor would argue Lily needed emergency guardianship.
If Cassandra could not become guardian because of the abuse case, Owen would seek temporary control as Marcus’s trusted assistant.
Owen had not been forced.
He expected a share of Vale Technologies.
The police arrested him at the meeting location.
His information led nowhere because Cassandra had intentionally given him an old address.
She trusted no one.
Meanwhile, Victor Dane requested a plea agreement.
He claimed Cassandra killed Anna alone.
He admitted helping conceal Daniel’s intellectual-property theft but denied knowing about poison.
Prosecutors showed him Anna’s video.
His composure broke.
He confessed that Cassandra began drugging Anna to frighten her.
The original goal was to make Anna appear mentally unstable.
Victor planned to remove Marcus from company leadership by portraying both spouses as unreliable.
But Cassandra increased the dose without telling him.
Anna died.
Victor covered it up.
He helped Cassandra enter Marcus’s life two years later.
“Why wait?” Detective Ruiz asked.
“Marcus was too suspicious after Anna died. Cassandra needed a new identity, new history, and public credibility.”
She spent two years building the perfect image.
Charity work.
Magazine profiles.
Carefully chosen friendships.
Then Victor arranged their meeting.
Marcus remembered the first evening.
Cassandra had asked about Lily before asking about his company.
He thought it showed compassion.
It was research.
Victor also revealed Cassandra’s fallback plan.
If exposed, she intended to destroy the Lark servers.
The original system architecture was stored in a remote research facility beneath an old hydroelectric plant.
A cyberattack could erase decades of work and create failures across hospitals using Vale software.
Cassandra had obtained partial access credentials through Owen.
Nora detected unusual login attempts.
The company isolated the network.
But one physical authentication device was missing.
It had been assigned to Marcus.
He kept it in the mansion study.
Cassandra must have taken it before the confrontation.
She could not access the servers remotely.
She needed to enter the hydroelectric facility.
Marcus ordered security to lock it down.
Then Lily disappeared.
Dr. Bell had taken both girls to a protected therapy center.
On the drive back, a vehicle struck the security car.
Masked men took Lily.
They left Mia behind.
Inside Lily’s backpack was a note.
BRING DANIEL’S KEY TO THE LARK FACILITY. COME ALONE.
Cassandra believed the deposit-box key opened more than one lock.
Marcus looked at Detective Ruiz.
“The key is evidence.”
“Your daughter is a hostage.”
“I am going.”
“You will not go alone.”
“The note says—”
“The note was written by someone who tortured your child. We do not follow her rules.”
Marcus stared at Lily’s empty chair.
For the first time since Anna’s death, he felt completely helpless.
Then Mia stepped forward.
“Cassandra doesn’t know the key broke.”
Everyone turned.
Mia opened her hand.
Half of the old metal key rested in her palm.
“The detective gave it back after the box opened. It snapped when I dropped my backpack.”
Cassandra was demanding a key that no longer worked.
But she did not know.
That gave police one advantage.
