Chapter 6 - Vincent Learned Why His Mother Died Calling One Name

Teresa was not kidnapped for ransom.

She was taken for a key.

Belladonna House had a sealed basement archive built by Giovanni Moretti.

After his death, only Sofia and Teresa knew mechanism.

Vincent didn't.

Sofia distrusted men in family enough to hide records from own son.

That truth wounded him.

Teresa had refused tell Vale.

He abducted her.

Vivian tracked father’s old security contractor who helped Vale.

She came to Vincent because she finally understood Vale was preparing to destroy everything.

“Where is Teresa?” Vincent asked.

“Belladonna wine cellar.”

“In my house?”

“Vale knows tunnels better than you.”

Humiliating.

Old estates hold arrogance in architecture.

Police involvement risked hostage.

Vincent wanted storm basement.

Vivian:

“He'll kill her.”

Rosa? I arrived because nobody could keep me away now.

“What key?”

Vivian looked at my locket.

Of course.

Sofia's star locket wasn't merely evidence container.

Its outer shape matched part of mechanism.

Lucia's moon locket likely second half.

Where was moon?

Lucia didn't have.

Sofia might.

After Sofia died personal jewelry went Belladonna vault.

Vincent retrieved moon locket? Wait Sofia had star originally but sent star with Rosa. Lucia had moon. If Lucia gave hers? Let's reconcile: Sofia's star locket placed with Rosa evidence; Lucia wore moon. Lucia no longer has. Perhaps Marianne held moon in box? Not. Could be Vale took from Lucia. Vivian has it? Great.

Vivian opened clutch.

Moon.

“My father kept it.”

Now both.

Vale needed pair.

Why abduct Teresa?

She knew where keyhole located.

Then why lure?

He likely intended gain records.

Belladonna archive contained original ledgers tying elites to illegal adoptions.

Vale wanted destroy.

We informed police negotiators.

No vigilante rescue.

Vincent hated it.

“I can get Teresa out.”

Detective:

“And you can get her killed.”

He complied barely.

Vale called.

“Bring both lockets. No police.”

Classic.

We did not.

Negotiators built controlled exchange while tactical team entered tunnels through property plans Vivian provided.

Vale demanded Rosa bring lockets.

Absolutely not.

Police used replica? They could 3D print? Time. Instead Vivian offered herself.

“My father will trust me.”

Vincent:

“He used you.”

“He raised me.”

Both true.

Vivian insisted.

I looked at woman who hit me months earlier.

I didn't forgive.

But she was now risking herself to save Teresa.

People are not one worst moment.

Nor are they freed from it.

Operation began.

Vivian entered cellar wearing wire.

Vale sat beside Teresa tied to chair.

Charles Vale, seventy-two, looked like grandfather.

That's what evil disappointingly looks like sometimes.

He said:

“Where are lockets?”

“Vincent has them.”

“You failed.”

Vivian:

“No. You did.”

He laughed.

“You think those women wanted children? Half were addicts.”

“Then why forge records?”

“To make placements efficient.”

“Why threaten mothers?”

“To prevent instability.”

Language.

Always language.

He justified coercion as efficiency.

Vale admitted Anthony DeMarco initially participated but later tried withdraw after adopting Vivian and seeing system from other side.

That was why Sofia trusted Anthony enough in 1997 to arrange my escape.

Anthony helped hide me.

Then Vale retaliated by blackmailing him.

So DeMarco wasn't purely villain.

Complicit, then repentant, then cowardly.

Again complexity.

“What happened Lucia?”

“She wouldn't stop.”

“Did you put her Evergreen?”

“Yes.”

“Did you burn it?”

Vale became quiet.

Then:

“I burned records.”

People died.

He framed as records.

Vivian's voice broke.

“Three women died.”

“They weren't supposed to be there.”

There.

Admission enough.

Then he asked:

“Do you know why Sofia died?”

Vincent listening through monitor went rigid.

Vale continued.

“She found Rosalia.”

My throat closed.

“In 2008?”

“Later.”

Sofia had tracked me periodically after reunion.

Years later, shortly before death, she discovered Vale reopened private placement network through New Horizons.

She confronted Vivian privately? Maybe Vivian didn't know full.

Vale tampered with Sofia's medication? Need not medical high detail. Her aneurysm natural? Could be induced? Better maybe she died after confrontation unrelated. But title "last words". Let's reveal Vale threatened Rosa, Sofia stayed silent due fear; aneurysm natural. More grounded.

Vale:

“I told her if she exposed me, Rosalia's identity would go to every enemy Moretti ever had.”

Vincent closed eyes.

Sofia died with that fear.

Her last word wasn't clue to murder.

It was worry about me.

That hurt more.

Tactical team reached position.

Vale demanded Vivian call Vincent.

Instead she said:

“I was Baby 41, wasn't I?”

Vale froze.

“What?”

“My father bought me.”

“Anthony loved you.”

“That isn't answer.”

“He wanted child.”

“My mother wanted me too.”

Silence.

Vale knew birth mother had tried reclaim.

“Where is she?”

“Dead.”

Vivian staggered.

“From what?”

“Overdose.”

Maybe true.

Maybe.

But records could confirm.

Then Teresa shifted.

Vale looked away.

Tactical team moved.

Door burst.

Commands.

Vale reached toward firearm.

Vivian shouted.

Police subdued him.

No cinematic execution.

No Vincent killing.

Just handcuffs.

Teresa survived.

When brought upstairs, she slapped Vincent.

“You took too long.”

He laughed and cried simultaneously.

Then Teresa saw me.

“Rosalia.”

I froze.

“You knew?”

She nodded.

“Since first night.”

“What?”

“When locket fell.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Sofia made me promise until Vincent confirmed.”

Another person choosing secrecy for me.

I was exhausted.

“Stop protecting me with lies.”

Teresa lowered eyes.

“You sound like Lucia.”

Maybe compliment.

Then archive opened legally under warrant.

The lockets fit brass mechanism behind Giovanni's wine racks.

Inside were ledgers dating to 1984.

Original adoption transactions.

Payments.

Judicial bribes.

Church officials.

Lawyers.

Some Moretti-connected.

Some DeMarco.

Some Vale.

And one document:

Rosalia Protection Trust — $2.4 million.

Created by Sofia.

Beneficiary me.

I stared.

Another inheritance.

Another fortune attached to identity I didn't ask.

Vincent:

“It's yours.”

“No.”

“It legally may be.”

“I don't care.”

He looked at me.

“You should.”

“Why?”

“Because my mother spent years protecting it.”

“Then maybe I decide what protection means.”

Good.

The money would become important later.

But first, two hundred people who watched Vivian whip me were about to receive an invitation back to Belladonna House.

May you like

This time, nobody would be pretending not to see.
