Chapter 1: The Black Bag Beneath the Bed

“Just swallow the soup already, you useless old woman, or I’ll dump it all over you!”
Gwendolyn’s voice echoed through the house just as Lucas Weaver slid his key into the front door.
It was 4:20 in the afternoon. He had left his insurance office early because a system failure had canceled the day’s appointments. On the way home, he stopped to buy fresh pastries, hot coffee, and a few chilled drinks. He wanted to surprise his wife and spend a quiet afternoon with his mother, Florence, who had been bedridden for nearly two years after suffering a str0ke.
But when he stepped into their home, he didn’t hear music or the television playing his mother’s favorite program.
He found a silence that felt like it was hiding something.
Lucas set the flowers on the dining table and walked toward the back bedroom. Before he reached the door, he heard a metallic clang followed by a weak cry.
“I’m sorry, dear... my hand slipped...” an elderly voice whispered.
“Your hand always ‘slips.’ You’re perfectly capable of making a mess, aren’t you?”
Lucas looked inside. His world shattered.
Gwendolyn stood beside the bed, dressed neatly in a cream-colored outfit. She held a bowl of soup in one hand while gripping Florence’s jaw with the other, forcing her mouth open.
The elderly woman trembled. Her nightgown was stained, one cheek was bright red, and her eyes were filled with fear.
“I can’t anymore, sweetheart,” she pleaded. “It hurts to swallow.”
“Then deal with it. I’m not wasting food just because you decided to become a burden.”
The helpless woman lying there was the same mother who had sold baked goods outside the central station to pay for his high school education. The same woman who ironed other people’s clothes late into the night and pretended she wasn’t hungry so he would have enough to eat.
Now she needed permission just to breathe.
The floor creaked beneath Lucas’s shoe.
Gwendolyn turned around. For a split second, her face went blank. Then she released Florence and quickly changed her expression.
“Honey... you’re home early. Your mother had another episode.”
Lucas walked in without answering. He noticed the bowl on the floor, the bent spoon, and his mother’s trembling hand clutching the blanket.
“Mom, it’s me.”
Florence recognized him and immediately burst into tears.
“Don’t scold her, son. It was my fault. She works so hard taking care of me.”
Gwendolyn folded her arms.
“See? She provokes me and then acts like the victim.”
“Were you forcing her to eat?”
“The doctor said she needs nutrition.”
“He never said to squeeze her face.”
“You’re gone all day. You have no idea how difficult it is to care for someone like her.”
Lucas took his mother’s hand. As he did, the sleeve of her nightgown slipped back. Dark purple and yellow b:ruis:es covered her forearm. Some looked exactly like fingerprints pressed deep into her skin.
Gwendolyn noticed them too.
“She h:it the bed rail,” she said far too quickly.
Lucas spotted another br:uise near her wrist and one more beneath the collar of her nightgown.
This wasn’t from a fall. And it wasn’t the first time.
Florence closed her eyes.
“Don’t ask, son... She told me that if I said anything, she’d send me away and you’d never see me again.”
Gwendolyn pressed her lips together.
“Your mother is confused. You can’t believe everything she says.”
Then Lucas noticed a black bag hidden beneath the bed. It was filled with unopened bottles of medication.
Medicine he had been buying every week. Medicine his mother was supposed to be taking.
And he realized that what he had discovered that afternoon was only the doorway to something far worse.
