Chapter 1 - The Empty Crib

I came home from a night with my mistress expecting my wife to be asleep. Instead, I found my infant son’s crib empty, every drawer stripped bare, and Claire’s wedding ring waiting beside a note that exposed the truth: she hadn’t left on impulse. She had been planning my destruction for weeks.

“Where is my son?”

My voice thundered through our Greenwich home as I shoved open the nursery door so hard the frame cracked.

Pain shot through my hand.

I barely felt it.

Three-month-old Noah’s crib was empty.

No blankets.

No diapers.

No formula.

Even the small blue bear he slept beside was gone.

I stood frozen while Vanessa’s perfume still clung to my collar.

Hours earlier, I had been inside a luxury Manhattan hotel with her, convinced I would be home before Claire woke up.

But Claire was already gone.

On the kitchen island sat her wedding ring beside a single note.

Don’t search for what you never bothered to protect.

I called once.

Then five times.

Then twelve.

Every call went straight to voicemail.

Finally, I called Claire’s mother.

“Is she with you?”

Linda went silent before answering.

“You mean the woman surviving on two hours of sleep while you pretended to attend business meetings?”

“She took my son and emptied our accounts.”

“Those were her accounts too,” Linda snapped. “She worked until the final month of her pregnancy. Stop acting like the victim.”

“I just need to know where Noah is.”

“What Claire needed was a husband. Instead, she got a man pretending to be single.”

She hung up.

Furious, I called my attorney, Daniel Brooks, and demanded an emergency custody order.

He hesitated.

“Before I file anything, tell me where you were last night.”

“Boston. Meeting investors.”

The lie came easily.

It survived less than six hours.

That afternoon, a private investigator called.

“Mr. Carter, your bank records show a suite at the Grand Meridian, dinner for two, champagne, and overnight valet.”

My stomach tightened.

“We also obtained footage of you entering the hotel with Vanessa Cole.”

There was no point denying it.

The affair had lasted six months.

While Claire handled every sleepless night alone, I paid for expensive dinners, jewelry, and weekend getaways.

I believed she knew nothing.

The investigator continued.

“Your wife didn’t leave suddenly. She planned this carefully over several weeks.”

I stared at the ring on the counter.

Then I remembered the documents Claire closed whenever I entered the study.

The quiet phone calls.

The day she requested printed financial records.

She hadn’t been waiting for me to change.

She had been building a case.

Then a message from Daniel appeared on my screen.
