Chapter 13: Standing His Ground

Lauren noticed the immediate shift in Ethan’s posture, her fork stopping mid-air as she watched him look at his phone. The old, familiar anxiety flickered across her features. “Is it your mom?” she asked quietly, her voice carrying a trace of worry. “Are they angry?”

Ethan set the phone down face-first on the granite counter, completely cutting off the visual assault of the notifications. He reached across the counter, taking her hand and giving it a firm, reassuring squeeze. “It doesn't matter if they’re angry, Lauren. Their anger is based on the fact that they were held accountable for their behavior for the first time in their lives. That’s their problem to deal with, not ours.”

“I don't want to cause a permanent rift between you and your dad, Ethan,” Lauren murmured, looking down at her plate. “I know how much you value your family.”

“Lauren, look at me,” Ethan commanded gently, waiting until her hazel eyes locked onto his. “You, Noah, and the life we are building inside these walls—this is my family. My primary responsibility is to protect you. My parents and my sister are extended relatives now. If they cannot treat the mother of my child with absolute respect and basic human decency, they do not get the privilege of access to our lives. It’s as simple as that.”

He picked up his phone, unlocked it, and opened a group chat that included his mother, his father, and his sister. He didn't type an emotional, defensive paragraph; instead, he crafted a concise, surgical response that left absolutely zero room for negotiation:

“I am only going to say this once. My reaction yesterday was a direct consequence of your complete lack of empathy and respect for my wife. You sat in my house on your phones for two days while Lauren physically collapsed trying to care for a severely sick child. That is unacceptable behavior from anyone, let alone family.

I will not be apologizing to anyone. We will be taking some space as a household. Do not call or text Lauren. If you wish to have a relationship with my son and me in the future, it begins with a written, sincere apology to Lauren for how you treated her in her own home. Until that happens, please respect our privacy.”

He hit send, watched the message deliver, and immediately went into his settings to mute the notifications for all three contacts. He tossed the phone into a decorative basket near the entryway, completely removing its distracting presence from their Saturday.

He walked back to the kitchen island, picking up his coffee mug with a satisfied smile. “Now, where were we? I believe someone promised me that we were going to build a massive blanket fort in the living room today.”

Noah let out a loud cheer from his high chair, throwing his plush bear into the air, and the sound of his laughter officially washed the final remnants of the toxic family dispute straight out of the room.
