Chapter 6 - Spencer Thorne’s Heritage Dinner
The Heritage Dinner was supposed to happen after the reception.
That was what the secret schedule showed.
At 7:30 p.m., after champagne and speeches, Charles Thorne planned to invite selected guests into Aldercrest’s library.
There, beneath oil paintings and restored plaster ceilings, he would present the estate as the centerpiece of a new private heritage investment fund.
Guests would be offered founding membership pledges.
Spencer would stand beside Kendra and speak about “joining families with shared values.”
My mother would smile.
Kendra would glow.
And everyone would assume the Marlowes had access to something rare.
They did.
Me.
They just did not know it.
By Monday morning, three investors had contacted Northbridge’s legal office asking whether their pledge reservations were refundable.
That was when we learned money had already changed hands.
Charles Thorne’s firm had collected “soft commitments” totaling nearly six million dollars based partly on Aldercrest materials.
He had not sold the estate.
He had sold proximity to a lie.
Amelia filed an injunction.
Northbridge sent cease-and-desist letters.
A state securities investigator called before lunch.
Spencer called Kendra thirty-two times.
She answered once with Dad sitting beside her.
He said she had embarrassed him.
He said Vivian was manipulating her.
He said if she loved him, she would issue a statement saying she had always known about the investment materials and the gate closure was a jealous family dispute.
Kendra put him on speaker.
Dad recorded with consent.
When Spencer said, “Your sister wants approval so badly she’ll back down if you cry,” Kendra closed her eyes.
That sentence changed her more than the chained gates had.
Because there is humiliation, and then there is hearing someone explain exactly how they planned to use your family’s broken places.
Kendra said one thing before hanging up.
“You never wanted a wife. You wanted access.”
