Chapter 7 - The Grandmother Who Filed First

Margaret filed for emergency grandparent visitation three days later.

She claimed Daniel was isolating Noah from “his only paternal grandmother.”

She claimed Emily was unstable.

She claimed Lydia’s reappearance proved Daniel was being emotionally manipulated by a woman with “no maternal standing.”

She attached photographs of herself holding Noah.

Photographs from the day she forced Emily to clean broken glass.

Daniel stared at the filing until the words blurred.

Emily sat beside him, stronger now but still moving slowly.

“She’s trying to use him the way she used you,” she said.

“Yes.”

“And she’s using me the way she used Lydia.”

“Yes.”

Emily looked at Noah sleeping in the bassinet.

“Then we don’t hide.”

So they did not.

The hearing was scheduled quickly.

Celeste submitted the nursery video, the police report, Paula’s statement, the medical instructions Emily had been given, Robert’s letters, Lydia’s letters, and the court officer’s report from the supervised study visit.

Margaret arrived dressed like a grieving widow.

Lydia arrived in simple gray wool, hands folded, face pale but steady.

Daniel saw her across the courthouse hallway.

For one second, neither moved.

Then Lydia said, “Hello, Danny.”

He walked to her.

The hug was awkward.

Careful.

Thirty-six years late.

Still real.

Margaret watched from twenty feet away.

Her face was unreadable.

Then Noah fussed in Emily’s arms.

Lydia stepped back immediately.

“May I see him?”

Emily smiled.

“Of course.”

Lydia did not take Noah.

She only looked.

Tears filled her eyes.

“He has your father’s mouth,” she said.

Daniel surprised himself by laughing.

“My father would hate that being the first thing you said.”

“He was vain about his mouth.”

That tiny piece of Robert as a flawed young man, not a portrait or a letter, cracked something open in Daniel.

Margaret saw them.

That was when she lost control.

“She is nothing to that child,” she snapped.

The hallway went silent.

Emily turned slowly.

May you like

“She is his grandmother,” Emily said. “And she asked before coming near him. That already makes her safer than you.”
