Chapter 5 - The Ten-Minute Countdown

The digital clock on the nursery nightstand glowed with an amber LED readout: 09:14 AM. Ten minutes.

That was the exact window I had given Grant and Vanessa to clear their belongings, strip off my stolen clothes, and vanish from my property before I transmitted the complete evidentiary file to federal prosecutors and state child welfare investigators.

Downstairs, the frantic, muffled sounds of chaos continued to ripple through the cavernous estate. I could hear the heavy thud of designer luggage being zipped, the sharp clatter of dropped cosmetics on marble tiles, and the desperate, venomous whispers of two people whose grand conspiracy had collapsed into a petty domestic squabble.

I sat quietly in the rocking chair, brushing my fingers through Lily’s soft curls while she happily played with a small wooden puzzle on the rug. The terror that had gripped her tiny frame when I first walked through the front door had completely melted away, replaced by the safe, comforting warmth of her mother’s presence.

At 09:22 AM, the heavy oak front door slammed shut with a vibrating shudder that shook the glass windowpanes of the second-floor landing.

A sleek, black luxury sedan roared to life in the circular driveway down below. Tires screeched violently against the gravel as the vehicle bolted down the private estate road, throwing up sprays of mud and crushed stone before vanishing around the tree line toward the main highway.

Silence descended upon the Hudson Valley estate—a profound, absolute silence that hadn't existed within these walls for over a year.

A soft chime sounded from my encrypted satellite terminal sitting on the nightstand.

I reached over and picked up the device. A secure notification banner flashed across the encrypted display: Perimeter sensors clear. All unauthorized entities departed the primary estate zone.

I exhaled a long, steady breath, feeling the last lingering remnants of operational tension drain completely from my shoulders. The mission near the Canadian border was officially closed. The domestic threat inside my own home had been neutralized. But as I looked down at the encrypted financial audit files still stored in the device’s secure cache, I knew that the true reckoning had only just begun.

Grant believed his affair, his fabricated custody trap, and his cruel manipulation of my daughter were the worst sins I had uncovered. He had no idea that my deployment near the border was merely a cover for a much larger, highly classified multi-jurisdictional investigation into offshore corporate tax shelters and white-collar embezzlement syndicates operating within the tristate area.

And right at the dead center of those illegal shell accounts sat a familiar name: Harrison & Hale Legal Partners.
