Chapter 4 - Bullets And Betrayal

The Island was not a tropical resort, but a heavily fortified compound on a private landmass in Puget Sound, accessible only by a private ferry that Marcus commanded. The massive stone house sat on a cliff, surrounded by high walls, security cameras, and a private army of men who answered only to Ethan.

For three days, we lived in a state of suspended reality. I spent my hours changing Ethan's dressings, monitoring his fever, and watching a surreal scene unfold in the massive living room. The ruthless billionaire sat on the floor, surrounded by coloring books, listening intently as Mia explained the complex lineage of her imaginary horses.

But the peace was a fragile illusion. On the fourth night, a massive storm rolled in, bringing thunder that rattled the bulletproof windows. I was in the kitchen pouring coffee when the power suddenly cut out, plunging the compound into complete darkness.

The emergency generators did not kick in.

"Marcus!" Ethan roared from the living room, grabbing me and pushing me behind him. "Get Mia!"

I scooped Mia up, pressing her face into my shoulder so she wouldn't scream. Marcus rushed into the room, night vision goggles strapped to his head.

"It is an inside job," Marcus said, his voice tight. "Someone cut the main line and disabled the backup. We have boats approaching the eastern dock. It's Viktor. He bought off half the security detail."

Viktor was Ethan's uncle, a man who had always coveted the Blackwood empire and despised Ethan's attempts to legitimize the family business.

"Take them to the panic room," Ethan ordered, checking the magazine of his weapon. He winced, his hand pressing against his bleeding side.

"You belong in a hospital bed!" I yelled, refusing to move. "If you fight now, your stitches will tear. You will bleed to death before they even shoot you!"

Ethan stepped close to me, pressing a hard, desperate kiss to my forehead. "I missed her first steps, Claire. I missed her first words. I am not going to miss her growing up. I will stop them here, or I will die trying."

He shoved us toward Marcus. I dragged Mia down a hidden staircase into a reinforced steel vault deep beneath the house. The heavy door slammed shut, sealing us in silence. But through the thick steel, I could hear the muffled echoes of war. Gunfire, shouting, the terrifying sounds of a violent struggle for survival.

Hours passed in the darkness. Mia fell asleep in my lap while I stared at the steel door, praying to a God I hadn't spoken to in years. I promised everything if He would just let Ethan walk back through that door.

Suddenly, the heavy locking mechanism began to turn. I pushed Mia behind me, grabbing a heavy metal flashlight, ready to swing at whoever walked through.

The door swung open.

Standing in the doorway, covered in sweat, rain, and fresh blood, was Ethan. He was leaning heavily against the doorframe, gasping for air, but his eyes were clear. Behind him, the emergency lights flickered back on.

"Viktor is gone," Ethan panted, sliding slowly down the wall until he was sitting on the floor. "It is over. The empire is clean."
