Chapter 4 - BEN HAD PHOTOS

Ben Lawson came to the state police office voluntarily.

He brought a folder.

Photographs.

Not dramatic surveillance.

Neighbor photographs.

A child standing barefoot in winter.

Emma carrying trash bags toward Carol’s shed.

Noah sitting alone on the porch after dark.

And one photograph of the kennel.

Empty.

But padlocked.

“I took these because I thought somebody would eventually need proof.”

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

His face collapsed.

“I didn’t have your number.”

“You could’ve found me.”

“I know.”

He looked ashamed.

“I called local police three times.”

Three.

Not once.

The reports existed.

But each had been closed after Wade spoke with responding officers.

No formal child-interview referral.

No follow-up.

One report described the situation as:

Family discipline dispute.

I stared.

A dog kennel.

A child.

Family discipline dispute.

State investigators expanded their review.

Not because I demanded arrests.

Because records raised questions.

Two local officers were reassigned pending review.

Wade’s status changed from confident deputy to subject of an investigation involving misconduct and possible interference.

He stopped calling me names.

Through his attorney, he said nothing.

May you like

That was smarter.
