Chapter 1 - THE GLOVES CAME OFF

Just three days after our wedding, my husband nearly sent the dining table flying with one vicious k because dinner was served a little late. Then he roared, “A woman needs to be h before she understands her place!” I couldn't stop myself from laughing. I stared directly into his eyes and answered, “In that case... the gloves are coming off.”

Exactly seventy-two hours after we signed our marriage certificate, my husband's charming mask completely crumbled.

That Tuesday evening, I arrived home almost an hour late after fighting through pouring rain and bumper-to-bumper traffic. The second I stepped inside the bright condo I had spent years exhausting myself to purchase long before I ever met him, I hurried straight toward the kitchen. Gregory had an almost military fixation on having every meal served precisely on time. Even so, when I brought the steaming plates of slow-cooked pot roast over to the dining table, the tension filling the room felt almost impossible to breathe through.

Gregory was sprawled across the sofa, endlessly scrolling on his phone, his entire body giving off a cold, hostile energy.

“Dinner is ready, honey,” I called softly.

Rather than thanking me, Gregory shot to his feet.

There was something in his eyes that I had never witnessed before.

Pure, uncontrollable rage.

He charged toward the dining table and, without speaking another word, drove the bottom of his dress shoe into the solid oak table.

C!

The entire table jerked violently.

Porcelain dishes shattered across the floor.

The meal I had worked so hard to make flew everywhere in a greasy disaster.

I stood completely frozen.

Gregory strode straight toward me and jabbed a finger just inches away from my face.

“You clearly have no idea what a wife is supposed to do!” he thundered. “We've only been married for three days, and you're already proving how lazy you are. Beginning tomorrow, every debit card and every online banking password will belong to me. You'll wake up at five every morning to cook, and after your little office job, you'll come home and wait on me. Do you understand?”

Then he moved even closer.

“A difficult wife has to be properly ‘disciplined’ before she learns to obey.”

He expected me to cry.

He expected me to plead.

Instead, a powerful calm washed over me, the kind that had been built through countless punishing hours long before Gregory ever came into my life.

Slowly, I bent down and picked up one of the razor-edged pieces from a broken plate.

Rolling the shard of porcelain casually between my fingers, I stared directly into his furious eyes.

A slow smile appeared on my face.

“So,” I said softly, my voice almost unnaturally steady, “you believe a wife needs discipline.”

I tipped my head slightly to one side.

“Tell me something, Gregory... how exactly were you planning to do that?”

A flash of uncertainty crossed his expression, but his arrogance quickly swallowed it.

He muttered a filthy curse, positioned his feet, raised his right hand high above him, and swung it toward me, completely convinced that this would be the moment he finally established control.

What Gregory had no way of knowing was that the quiet, soft-spoken financial analyst standing before him was nowhere near as defenseless as she appeared.

She had been concealing a secret powerful enough to destr0y him.

And he was less than two seconds away from finding out.
