Chapter 6 - What Frank Russo Really Wanted

The Blue Heron had been abandoned for six years.
Its neon sign still hung above the motel office, one blue wing broken.
Callum stopped two blocks away.
Police were not invited yet.
That bothered me.
“You called the FBI for Ruby’s foster house.”
“They would storm this place.”
“Maybe storming is useful.”
“Not with Ruby inside.”
Fair.
Callum had eight men.
Finn stayed behind because Callum still did not fully trust him.
Also fair.
We entered through the kitchen.
Old grease.
Rot.
Broken tile.
No guards.
Too easy.
Then Ruby appeared at the end of the hallway.
Alone.
“Maeve?”
I stepped forward.
“Lake George.”
She froze.
I said,
“I fell off the dock and Brendan told everyone I got attacked by a fish.”
Ruby laughed once.
Tears filled her eyes.
“That’s you.”
She ran toward me.
Callum grabbed my arm.
“Wait.”
Too late.
A red laser appeared on my chest.
Sniper.
Ruby stopped.
Frank’s voice came through the lobby speakers.
“Touching.”
Callum moved between me and the laser.
Of course he did.
I hissed,
“Stop doing heroic nonsense.”
“Noted.”
Frank continued.
“Bring her into the dining room.”
We obeyed.
Ruby walked beside me.
Her hands were untied.
Frank wanted cooperation more than restraint.
In the old dining room, Enzo Moretti sat in a chair.
Hands zip-tied.
Mouth bleeding.
Callum stopped.
“Uncle.”
Enzo looked furious rather than afraid.
Frank stood behind him.
Two armed men nearby.
“Family reunion.”
Ruby squeezed my hand.
Frank looked at her.
“She remembers faces beautifully.”
I understood.
That was why she mattered.
At twelve, Ruby had spent three weeks inside Raven transport points.
She saw Frank.
Dominic.
Finn.
Enzo.
Maybe Salvatore.
She had given Brendan names.
Brendan recorded her testimony.
“Where is it?” Frank asked me.
“What?”
“Brendan’s recording.”
“I don’t have it.”
“You have his ledger.”
“Not with me.”
Frank smiled.
“I know.”
This was not about documents.
Frank wanted Callum to confront Enzo.
Wanted family blood spilled.
“Why?” I asked.
Frank looked at me.
“Why what?”
“Why all this?”
“You think I need childhood trauma?”
“Probably.”
Callum almost sighed.
Frank laughed.
Then his expression became serious.
“Enzo owns me.”
That surprised everyone except Enzo.
Frank continued.
“Thirty years I did his work. Built his routes. Took his blame. Killed Dominic because he told me.”
Callum’s face hardened.
Frank pointed at Enzo.
“He ordered your father poisoned.”
“I know.”
“No, you know a story.”
Frank grabbed Enzo’s hair.
“This man signed it.”
He threw a document onto the table.
Payment authorization.
A private nurse.
Medication.
Dates matching Salvatore’s collapse.
Enzo spat blood.
“It proves nothing.”
Ruby whispered,
“It’s him.”
Everyone looked at her.
She stared at Enzo.
“He came to the warehouse.”
Enzo’s face changed.
Ruby continued.
“He told Frank no witnesses.”
Frank smiled bitterly.
“See?”
Callum looked at his uncle.
The temptation to kill him was visible.
Enzo saw it.
“So do it.”
Callum did not move.
Enzo laughed.
“You’re your father’s son.”
Callum’s voice was quiet.
“That’s what I’m afraid of.”
Frank grew impatient.
“I did not drag everyone here for therapy.”
“What do you want?” I asked.
“Freedom.”
“Then leave.”
He laughed.
“Enzo has files on every job I ever did.”
“Destroy them.”
“They exist in multiple locations.”
“So you want him dead?”
“No.”
Frank smiled.
“I want Callum to kill him.”
Then the trap became clear.
If Callum executed Enzo on camera, Frank gained leverage over him forever.
He would own proof.
A Mafia boss murdering his uncle.
Enough to destabilize Callum’s legitimate businesses.
Enough to trigger law enforcement.
Enough to start internal war.
“And Ruby?” I asked.
“She verifies the confession.”
“She’s seventeen.”
“She has eyes.”
Callum glanced toward me.
I knew what he was thinking.
We needed time.
So I said the cruelest thing available.
“Brendan said you cried after Dominic.”
Frank froze.
I had invented it.
But his reaction told me something.
“What?”
“My brother wrote about you.”
I continued.
“He said Frank Russo liked pretending he was crueler than he was.”
Frank’s face changed.
“Your brother was a junkie.”
“He also said you didn’t know children were being moved until Enzo had already built the route.”
Enzo shouted,
“She’s lying.”
There.
Frank looked toward him.
I kept going.
“Maybe you did terrible things after. But it started with Enzo.”
Frank’s gun lowered slightly.
Callum understood my plan.
Division.
Frank had served Enzo for years.
Resentment existed.
Use it.
I said,
“You don’t want freedom. You want him to admit he made you disposable.”
Frank stared at Enzo.
Enzo snapped,
“You were always disposable.”
Bad choice.
Frank’s face emptied.
The gun turned.
Enzo panicked.
“Frank—”
Callum moved.
Fast.
He knocked Frank’s arm upward as the gun fired.
Chaos.
Ruby and I dropped behind the table.
Callum’s men entered from both doors.
Shots.
Glass.
Shouting.
Enzo crawled.
Frank punched Callum.
Callum hit him back.
Brutal.
Personal.
I saw Ruby staring.
“Don’t.”
“What?”
“Don’t watch.”
She looked at me.
“I’ve seen worse.”
That sentence broke something in me.
No child should say it that calmly.
I grabbed her hand.
“We’re leaving.”
We reached the kitchen.
Enzo appeared behind us.
He had freed one hand.
Gun.
“Stop.”
Ruby froze.
Enzo looked at her.
“You should have died five years ago.”
I stepped in front.
He laughed.
“You think Callum will save you?”
“No.”
I looked at the fire suppression lever beside the stove.
“I think the building will.”
I pulled it.
Foam exploded from ceiling nozzles.
Enzo cursed.
Visibility vanished.
Ruby and I ran.
Outside, federal vehicles screamed into the lot.
I laughed.
Callum had called them after all.
He emerged minutes later with Frank in custody.
Alive.
Enzo too.
Alive.
That surprised me.
Callum’s lip was bleeding.
I walked toward him.
“You didn’t kill them.”
“No.”
“You wanted to.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
His eyes met mine.
“Because then they still control what I become.”
That answer was worth more than a kiss.
I kissed him anyway.
Brief.
Impulse.
Shock.
Callum froze.
So did I.
Ruby whispered from behind me,
“Finally.”
I turned.
“How long have you known us?”
“Like an hour.”
“Be quiet.”
Callum touched his mouth.
Then looked at me.
“That was—”
“Adrenaline.”
“Of course.”
“Never happened.”
“Understood.”
May you like
Ruby rolled her eyes.
We all knew that was a lie.
