Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT THE WHITMORE TOWER WENT DARK

Lucy had seen Elena before.

The realization changed everything.

Elena admitted she had traveled to New York twice during the previous year. After Daniel threatened her in Vermont, she followed him, hoping to learn what he wanted.

During one visit, she saw Lucy alone outside Daniel’s office.

“I didn’t know she was your daughter,” Elena said. “She was crying. I showed her a game Samuel taught me—drawing a yellow door whenever you need to remember there is always a way out.”

“Why didn’t you contact me?”

“Daniel returned before I could ask her name.”

Lucy had remembered.

And if Daniel had taken her to the freight terminal, she might search for a yellow door.

The rescue plan began at eleven.

Nora would bring the cassette. Charles’s security team would enter through the storm tunnel. Police tactical units waited beyond the district after agreeing not to approach until Lucy’s location was confirmed.

Celeste insisted on going.

“My father will expect Daniel to betray him,” she said. “He won’t expect me.”

At 11:47 p.m., Nora entered Pier 41 carrying a metal case.

Rain hammered the broken roof.

Industrial lights cast long shadows across rusted machinery. Daniel stood on an elevated platform wearing a dark coat.

Victor Arden waited beside him.

Lucy was nowhere visible.

“Where is she?” Nora shouted.

Daniel smiled.

“You always were impatient.”

Victor looked older than Charles but carried the same cold authority Celeste once imitated. Two armed men stood near him.

“Put the case on the floor,” Victor ordered.

Nora obeyed.

“Now step back.”

“I want Lucy.”

“You’ll have her when we verify the recording.”

Daniel descended the stairs.

For the first time, Nora saw him without the disguise of marriage. His handsome face, controlled voice, and polished movements were tools. There was nothing beneath them but appetite.

“You could have had everything,” he said.

“I had everything before I met you.”

His expression tightened.

“I gave you a family.”

“You locked our daughter in a dark room.”

“She needed discipline.”

“She needed a father.”

Daniel slapped Nora.

Her head turned with the impact.

She tasted blood.

Then she faced him again.

“Was that supposed to make me afraid?”

Daniel seized her jaw.

“It should.”

A voice rang out from the shadows.

“Take your hand off her.”

Celeste stepped beneath the light.

Victor swore.

Daniel released Nora.

“What are you doing here?” he demanded.

Celeste removed her white coat. A recording device was clipped to the inside.

“Ending my investment.”

Victor signaled to one of his men.

Before he could move, the entire terminal went dark.

Charles’s team had cut the power.

Gunfire erupted.

Nora dropped to the floor. Celeste pulled her behind a steel column as security lights flickered red.

Daniel shouted orders.

Victor fled toward the lower level.

From somewhere beneath them came a child’s scream.

“Mommy!”

Nora ran.

She descended a metal staircase, ignoring Celeste’s warning. The lower corridor flooded ankle-deep with rainwater.

“Lucy!”

“Mommy!”

Nora followed the voice to a locked storage room.

A faded yellow emergency door stood at the far end.

Lucy’s small fingers appeared beneath it.

Nora pulled at the handle.

Locked.

She struck it with both hands.

“Step back, baby!”

Celeste found an iron bar and wedged it into the frame. Together they forced the door open.

Lucy rushed into Nora’s arms.

Her wrists had been tied with plastic restraints, but she was alive.

Nora held her so tightly Lucy squeaked.

“I knew you’d find the yellow door,” Lucy cried.

“You found it first.”

Celeste cut the restraints.

Footsteps thundered through the corridor.

Daniel appeared with a gun.

Celeste stepped between him and Nora.

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You think they’ll forgive you?”

“No,” Celeste said. “But I can stop becoming you.”

He raised the gun.

Lucy screamed.

A shot exploded.

Celeste fell.

Nora covered Lucy with her body.

Daniel took another step, but Charles emerged behind him and struck his arm. The gun slid across the wet floor.

The two men crashed against the wall.

Daniel was younger, but Charles fought with the fury of a father reliving thirty years of failure.

Police flooded the corridor and dragged Daniel away.

Nora crawled toward Celeste.

Blood spread across her shoulder.

“Stay with me,” Nora said.

Celeste tried to smile.

“Did Lucy see?”

“No. She’s with my father.”

“That’s good.”

Paramedics rushed in.

Elsewhere in the terminal, Victor escaped through the storm tunnel before police sealed the exit.

By dawn, Daniel was charged with kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment, conspiracy, financial fraud, and attempted murder.

Celeste survived surgery.

Lucy slept in Nora’s arms at the hospital.

Charles sat beside them, his shirt stained with rain and blood.

For one quiet hour, it seemed the worst was over.

Then every screen in the hospital went black.

Phones lost service.

Emergency generators activated.

Benjamin entered with terror on his face.

“Victor accessed Whitmore’s central system before the raid.”

“What did he do?” Charles asked.

“He triggered the debt covenants and transferred the company’s liquid reserves.”

Charles stood.

“Where?”

“To accounts controlled by Hale Meridian.”

Benjamin swallowed.

“And he scheduled the Whitmore Tower for complete data destruction at noon.”

Nora looked at the clock.

They had less than five hours.

May you like

Daniel had taken Lucy to force them into the open.

Victor had used the distraction to steal an empire.
