Chapter 3 - Uncle Marcus Came for Lily

Daniel left the hospital at 3:40 a.m.
He called Melissa from the car.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
His driver accelerated.
“Faster.”
“Mr. Harrington—”
“Faster.”
Daniel called the mansion security desk.
A guard answered.
“Sir?”
“Where is Marcus?”
A pause.
“Mr. Marcus Harrington left approximately forty minutes ago.”
Daniel’s heart stopped.
“Where?”
“We don’t know.”
“Did he ask about Lily?”
Silence.
“Answer me.”
“He asked whether Ms. Melissa had taken her home.”
Daniel ended the call.
Called Melissa again.
This time she answered.
Sleepy.
“Daniel?”
“Where are you?”
“My house.”
“Lily?”
“Asleep.”
“Lock every door.”
Melissa became instantly awake.
“What happened?”
“Do it.”
“Daniel—”
“Marcus may come.”
Silence.
“Our brother?”
“Melissa.”
“I’m locking them.”
“Call 911.”
“What did he do?”
“I’ll tell you when I get there.”
Daniel arrived twelve minutes later.
Police were already outside.
Melissa opened the door.
Lily stood behind her clutching a stuffed rabbit.
“Daddy?”
Daniel immediately knelt.
“I’m sorry I woke you.”
“Is Mommy alive?”
Everything stopped.
Melissa looked at Daniel.
He had not told Lily.
“How do you know?”
Lily pointed at Melissa.
“Auntie was crying.”
Melissa closed her eyes.
Daniel looked at his daughter.
There was no gentle way to make this simple.
“Yes.”
Lily stared.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Hospital.”
“Is she sick?”
“She’s hurt, but she’s going to be okay.”
Lily’s face crumpled.
“Can I see her?”
Daniel pulled her close.
“Tomorrow.”
“Why did she go away?”
That question would take years to answer properly.
“Something bad happened.”
“Did she leave me?”
“No.”
Daniel said it immediately.
“No, sweetheart.”
Lily began crying.
Daniel held her.
“She did not leave because she didn’t love you.”
“Then why didn’t she come home?”
Daniel looked at Melissa.
Then back.
“She was scared.”
“Of you?”
His throat tightened.
“She thought she had to be.”
Lily did not understand.
Good.
She did not need the adult ugliness tonight.
A detective entered twenty minutes later.
They had located Marcus’s car.
Abandoned near the airport.
But passenger manifests showed no flight.
Then Daniel received a text.
Marcus.
We need to talk before you destroy this family over Grace’s lies.
Daniel showed the detective.
Another message.
She disappeared once. Ask yourself why.
Then:
You know how unstable she became after Lily was born.
Daniel stared.
There it was.
Narrative building.
Postpartum anxiety.
Grace had experienced it.
Briefly.
Marcus knew.
Now he was turning a medical history into a weapon.
Daniel typed:
Where are you?
Marcus replied:
Somewhere you’ll listen.
Then a photograph arrived.
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
Lily’s elementary school.
Taken from across the street.
Melissa whispered:
“Oh, God.”
The image had been taken recently.
Trees bare.
Same construction fence installed last week.
Marcus—or someone working for him—had been watching Lily’s school.
Daniel wanted to break something.
Instead, he handed the phone to police.
Because rage was not a plan.
By morning, search warrants targeted Marcus’s office and home.
Investigators found $3.4 million in undeclared accounts.
Encrypted drives.
Trust statements.
Photographs of Grace.
And a folder labeled:
L.H. TRANSITION
Lily Harrington.
Inside was a draft petition.
If Daniel were deemed unable to serve as trustee due to “acute psychological instability following the reappearance of his presumed-deceased spouse,” Marcus would petition for temporary control of Lily’s trust.
Daniel stared.
“He planned for Grace to be found.”
Detective Teresa nodded.
“Eventually.”
“Then why lock her downstairs?”
“Maybe he needed time.”
“For what?”
“Destroy records. Move money. Prepare his argument.”
There was more.
A guardianship contingency.
Marcus would ask to become Lily’s temporary financial guardian if Daniel became “unavailable.”
“What does unavailable mean?”
Teresa looked grim.
“We’re investigating.”
Daniel did not need details.
The implication was enough.
Then an officer entered.
“We found Marcus.”
Daniel stood.
“Where?”
The officer looked toward Lily.
“St. Paul.”
“Doing what?”
“He went to meet someone.”
“Who?”
The answer made Daniel sit back down.
Dr. Samuel Keene.
Daniel’s longtime psychiatrist.
A man who had treated Daniel briefly after Grace’s supposed death.
Marcus had scheduled an emergency meeting with him.
The purpose?
To persuade Dr. Keene to sign a statement saying Daniel’s judgment might be impaired.
Marcus was trying to manufacture the exact condition that would let him take control.

And he had begun before Grace was ever pulled from beneath the floor.
