Chapter 15: The Cross-Examination

“Mrs. Frederick, please step up to the witness stand,” Justice Vance said, her voice dropping into a tone that made Sarah’s lawyers instantly stiffen in their chairs.

Sarah stood up, smoothing her dress with a practiced motion, and walked to the small wooden stand at the side of the room. She took the oath, her voice trembling slightly but still carrying that refined, aristocratic cadence she had spent her entire life cultivating.

My attorney walked toward the stand, holding a large, glossy print of one of the forensic photographs taken at the major crimes precinct. He turned the image toward her, showing the deep, purple hand-shaped bruises fading on Alice’s lower back.

“Mrs. Frederick, I want you to look at this photograph,” my attorney said, his voice dropping into a sharp, demanding register. “Do you recognize these marks?”

Sarah looked at the image, her face instantly turning a sickly, translucent pale. She looked away quickly, staring down at her own hands. “I... I have seen similar marks. But Alice was always a very clumsy child. She was always falling off her bicycle or bumping into the furniture.”

“A clumsy child?” my attorney countered, stepping closer to the stand. “Are you telling this court that a child falling off a bicycle leaves a perfect imprint of an adult hand across her shoulder blades? Are you telling us that a bump against a coffee table leaves older, yellowing contusions that prove a sustained, months-long pattern of physical trauma?”

“My father is an old man!” Sarah suddenly burst out, her composure cracking entirely as she gripped the edge of the wooden railing. “He has dedicated his entire life to this community! He built schools! He funded hospitals! He didn't mean to hurt her, he was just trying to teach her how to behave properly! She was being difficult, she wasn't listening to his demands!”

The entire courtroom went completely silent. Sarah realized what she had just said, her mouth staying open as she looked around the room, seeing the horrified expression on her own lawyers' faces. In her desperation to defend the patriarch, she had accidentally confessed to the very core of our accusation: she believed that the physical abuse of her daughter was a justified consequence for failing to meet her father’s archaic standards.

Justice Vance leaned forward over her bench, her eyes blazing with an intense, judicial fury. “That is enough, Mrs. Frederick. You may step down.”

The judge didn't even wait for the attorneys to offer their closing arguments. She picked up her gavel and brought it down against the wooden block with a loud, ringing strike that echoed like thunder through the small chamber.

“The court finds the mother’s testimony to be completely devoid of credibility and deeply disturbing,” Justice Vance announced. “Effective immediately, temporary sole physical and legal custody of the minor child, Alice Frederick, is granted exclusively to the father. The mother is placed under a permanent, non-expiring restraining order. She is banned from coming within five hundred feet of the child, her school, or her residence. Any attempt to contact the child will result in immediate arrest and criminal contempt charges. This court will not tolerate a mother who views the systematic breaking of a child's body as a form of family discipline.”
