Chapter 6 - Lily’s First Birthday
Lily turned one on a quiet Saturday.
No ballroom.
No garden full of investors.
No hundred-person guest list.
Daniel invited twelve people.
Rachel.
Jonathan.
Daniel’s mother.
Two friends.
A few relatives who had supported them without turning the tragedy into entertainment.
The cake was pink.
Lily destroyed it with both hands.
Rachel laughed.
Daniel took forty pictures.
At 3:14 p.m., Helen Park arrived with one folder.
Daniel frowned.
“You brought legal documents to a birthday party?”
“Tradition.”
“What tradition?”
“I just invented it.”
She smiled.
“Five minutes.”
They stepped into the study.
The trust activation had occurred automatically.
Lily’s beneficial branch was now permanent.
Protected.
No Martin.
No collateral-line override.
No deadline anyone could exploit.
Daniel looked at the document.
“She has no idea.”
“She shouldn’t.”
Helen closed the folder.
“She’s one.”
Daniel nodded.
“Good.”
Outside, Lily squealed because frosting had entered her hair.
That felt more important than $200 million of future rights.
Victoria called from prison that evening.
Daniel accepted.
Supervised line.
“Can I hear her?”
“Yes.”
He held the phone near Lily.
Victoria sang happy birthday.
Her voice broke halfway through.
Lily stared at the phone.
Then babbled.
Victoria cried.
Afterward she asked:
“Did the trust activate?”
Daniel became still.
Then realized the question no longer frightened him.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“Good.”
He studied her voice.
“You mean that?”
“Yes.”
She started crying again.
“I almost helped someone kill my daughter over money that was never mine.”
Daniel said nothing.
“I don’t want to know the number anymore.”
That sounded like change.
Maybe.
Change takes time.
He did not reward it.
But he noticed.
“Take care of yourself, Victoria.”
“You too.”
The call ended.
Daniel returned to the party.
Rachel was cleaning cake from Lily’s ears.
Jonathan held a napkin uselessly.
Daniel stood in the doorway.
For years, Sterling birthdays had been performances.
This one was chaos.
