Chapter 1 - The Woman in the Photograph

My brother punched me at Dad’s funeral because I refused to give him the safe key—but the inheritance wasn’t the only secret he was desperate to hide. Blood stained my black dress as Marcus screamed, “She’s stealing what belongs to me!” What he didn’t know was that Dad’s safe contained proof of something far uglier than stolen money: Marcus had been draining Dad’s accounts to finance an affair behind his wife’s back.
The air inside Dad’s study felt suffocating.
Relatives crowded behind me while Marcus paced across the hardwood floor, whiskey heavy on his breath.
My split lip still throbbed from the blow he’d given me during the funeral.
“How long are you going to keep playing the victim?” he hissed.
I didn’t answer.
By the fireplace stood Vanessa, his wife, wearing a diamond necklace Marcus had supposedly bought her for their anniversary.
She had no idea there was another woman.
Minutes earlier, Marcus had bragged that Dad’s safe held nearly two million dollars in cash, bonds, and property deeds.
Dad had deliberately allowed him to believe that.
I knelt before the steel safe and pulled the brass key from the chain beneath my mourning dress.
Marcus leaned over me.
“Open it. Now.”
Then he whispered so only I could hear:
“And when I get what’s mine, stay out of my life.”
I looked up at him.
“It isn’t yours.”
His face twisted.
“Everything Dad owned belongs to me!”
I inserted the key.
Click.
The safe opened.
Everyone leaned forward.
No cash.
No jewelry.
No bonds.
Only six sealed folders, a flash drive, and a handwritten note from Dad.
Marcus went pale.
“What the hell is this?”
I picked up the note.
“Before anyone touches these documents, Dad requested that his attorney be present.”
“What attorney?” Marcus shouted. “I didn’t call any damn attorney!”
A voice came from the hallway.
“You didn’t have to.”
Samuel Price, Dad’s attorney, stepped into the room.
Two bank fraud investigators followed him.
Marcus stopped breathing.
Vanessa stared at their badges.
“What is going on?”
I slowly lifted the flash drive.
Six months earlier, Dad had noticed money disappearing from his accounts.
At first, he suspected fraud.
Then he discovered the transfers were authorized by Marcus.
Hotel suites.
Jewelry purchases.
Luxury dinners.
Cash transfers to a woman Vanessa had never heard of.
And Dad had saved everything.
Marcus suddenly lunged toward me.
“Give me that drive!”
Two relatives grabbed him.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“What woman?” she whispered.
Marcus froze.
I looked at my brother—the man who had hit me at our father’s funeral because he thought violence could keep his secrets buried.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“Dad didn’t just discover Marcus was stealing from him,” I said quietly. “He discovered who Marcus was spending the money on.”
Vanessa turned toward her husband.
“Marcus… who is she?”
Nobody moved.
Samuel opened the first folder.
And when Vanessa saw the photograph clipped to the first page, she screamed.
