Chapter 6 - TERESA’S VERSION OF FAMILY

Teresa called me from five different numbers.

I blocked four.

Answered the fifth.

Not because I wanted to hear her.

Because Simone said occasionally people say useful things when they believe they can still persuade you.

Teresa did.

“Catherine, this family has done everything for you.”

I almost laughed.

“What?”

“We accepted Chloe.”

My body went cold.

“Accepted?”

“You know what I mean.”

“No.”

I wanted her to say it.

“Chloe isn’t Mark’s biological daughter.”

There.

Mark had been in Chloe’s life since she was four.

She called him Dad sometimes.

Sometimes Mark corrected people who called her his stepdaughter.

Apparently Teresa kept a ledger biology had never erased.

“So that is why Paula’s children got seafood and Chloe got ramen?”

“That is childish.”

“No.”

I looked at the hotel window.

“That is precisely the kind of thing we’re discussing.”

“She had food.”

There.

The lowest possible standard.

Not love.

Not inclusion.

Food.

“She was humiliated.”

“She’s dramatic because you teach her to be.”

I closed my eyes.

Then Teresa said:

“You always thought having a paycheck made you better than us.”

I suddenly understood.

The resentment was old.

My income.

My house.

My caution.

My refusal to mix every asset.

They interpreted boundaries as arrogance.

Then used my generosity anyway.

“You had my emergency card.”

“Because you trusted me.”

“Yes.”

“And you abused it.”

Silence.

“It was one dinner.”

“No.”

I whispered:

“The dinner was simply the first thing Chloe showed me.”

May you like

Then I hung up.
