Chapter 7 - Brandon Lost the Thing He Valued Most
It was not the money.
That surprised Gwen.
Brandon still earned well.
He still played golf, though less often.
He still had enough to live comfortably.
What he lost was reputation.
Not publicly.
No newspaper article.
No viral scandal.
Something smaller.
More painful.
Family mythology.
For years, Brandon had been:
The successful son.
The generous brother.
The man who paid.
The one everyone called when money became complicated.
After the divorce records and Rosalind’s loan dispute, relatives stopped automatically believing him.
At Christmas, Rosalind paid for catering herself.
Heather booked her own flights.
An uncle asked Brandon to split a dinner bill.
Apparently he looked offended.
Gwen heard about it through Heather and laughed for ten straight seconds.
The transformation was not dramatic.
Nobody exiled him.
Nobody screamed.
They simply stopped subsidizing the image.
That was enough.
Brandon’s country-club membership was sold to help repay Rosalind.
That hurt him.
Heather said:
“More than losing the marriage?”
Gwen did not answer.
She hoped not.
