Chapter 1: The Moment Everything Cracked

The slap wasn't the hardest thing I'd ever endured.

It was the certainty in Garrick's eyes that hurt the most.

He shoved my handbag from my shoulder, sending it skidding across the polished marble floor.

I clenched my fists so tightly that my wedding ring dug painfully into my skin.

For several long seconds...

The grand foyer fell completely silent.

Then my mother-in-law, Miriam Vance, smiled with unmistakable satisfaction.

"Get out of this house!" Garrick shouted, his face twisted with anger. "You don't speak to my mother that way under her own roof."

Her house?

My eyes drifted around the room.

The crystal chandelier.

The sweeping staircase.

The imported Italian marble I had personally approved during construction.

The oversized family portrait above the fireplace, where Garrick and Miriam stood proudly in front while I appeared slightly behind them, smiling like a decorative accessory.

Miriam delicately touched a dry handkerchief to the corner of her eye.

"I only reminded her to be grateful," she said sweetly. "Some women marry into wealth and immediately forget where they came from."

"My place?"

The words barely left my lips.

Garrick stepped closer.

"Don't start."

But I already had.

For three years...

I had smiled through every insult.

Every family dinner.

Every charity gala where Miriam introduced me as "the lucky girl my son rescued."

Only minutes earlier, she had announced to six relatives that I was barren, useless, and living comfortably on Garrick's generosity.

No one defended me.

Garrick remained silent.

So...

I laughed.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just once.

A quiet laugh filled with disappointment.

That was all Miriam needed.

"Did you hear that?" she cried. "She's mocking me in my own home!"

Within seconds...

Garrick rushed to her defense.

"Pack whatever you brought with you," Miriam ordered coldly.

"Leave the jewelry."

"Leave the car."

"And leave every single thing my son paid for."

I simply looked at her.

Neither of them knew the truth.

Every month...

The ten thousand dollars Miriam happily spent on luxury spas, designer handbags, and private chauffeurs originated from my account.

Yes...

The transfers passed through Garrick's business.

But every dollar belonged to me.

The mansion she proudly claimed as the Vance family estate...

Had never legally belonged to Garrick.

It had been purchased through a private investment company.

One that I quietly owned.

Garrick frowned.

"Why are you still standing there?"

I bent down.

Picked up my handbag.

Brushed a speck of dust from the leather.

My hands never shook.

"Because..."

"I wanted to remember this moment exactly as it happened."

Miriam laughed.

"So you can write about it in your diary?"

I met Garrick's furious stare.

Then smiled.

Not with anger.

With certainty.

"No."

"I want to remember it for court."

Neither of them understood what I meant.

Not yet.

I turned without another word.

Walked through the massive oak doors.

And left them standing inside the mansion they believed they owned.

Behind me...

No one realized the countdown had already begun.

Within days...

Everything they had spent years building would begin to unravel.
