Chapter 8 - The Fortress of Brotherhood

Over the next six months, the estate in Lake Travis transformed completely.
The story of the dungeon escape came to a final, definitive conclusion in court. Armed with the toxicological evidence from Ethan’s exhumation and the encrypted financial files from the black drive, the state prosecutor secured a conviction against Rebecca and Julian Vance for capital murder. Both were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
With the legal battles behind us, I began the process of closing down my former operations.
I transferred my legitimate shipping and logistics businesses into a public charitable foundation dedicated to protecting abused children and funding pediatric trauma centers across Texas. The darker corners of my empire were dismantled, sold off, or permanently shut down.
I was no longer Thomas Moretti, the feared boss of Austin.
I was Thomas Moretti, a full-time father.
On a warm Saturday afternoon in September, the wooden treehouse in the massive hundred-year-old oak tree was finally completed.
It was a magnificent structure—built with cedar wood, featuring small glass windows, a rope bridge, and a yellow slide leading down to a soft green lawn.
Leo, whose leg had healed completely without a limp, was running across the rope bridge with three of his new school friends, shouting happily as they played pirate ship.
Down on the grass, three-year-old Maya was sitting on a soft blanket, wearing a pink party hat, blowing bubbles into the warm afternoon air with Mrs. Gable.
Frank, now retired from his former security duties and working as the estate manager, walked up to the patio carrying two glasses of iced tea.
"You look relaxed, Thomas," Frank smiled, handing me a glass.
"I am relaxed, Frank," I replied, taking a sip as I watched Leo slide down the yellow slide, laughing hysterically.
"The state auditor’s office called this morning," Frank added softly. "They finished liquidating Ethan’s estate. Every cent of his twelve-million-dollar trust has been placed into a secure education fund for Leo and Maya. They will be set for life."

"Ethan would have been proud," I murmured, looking up at the blue sky above the lake.
"He would be proud of you, Thomas," Frank said, resting a heavy hand on my shoulder. "You didn't just protect them. You gave them back their childhood."
