Chapter 9: The Sit-Down

Dante Russo did not take defeat gracefully.
When you strip an arrogant man of his money and his pride, he becomes desperate. And desperate men are infinitely more dangerous than calculated ones.
Two days after Lyra dismantled his legitimate fronts, Noah received a formal request for a "sit-down." The location was neutral territory: an old, abandoned cathedral on the border of the East and West sides.
Noah arrived with Paulie and four trusted guards. The rain had returned, drumming a heavy, relentless beat against the stained glass windows of the cathedral.
Dante was already there, standing near the altar. He didn't look polished anymore. His silver suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and his eyes were manic. He was surrounded by a dozen heavily armed men.
"You brought a small army, Dante," Noah said, his voice echoing in the cavernous space as he walked down the center aisle. He kept his hands visible, away from his coat. "I thought this was a negotiation."
"There is no negotiation, Moretti," Dante spat, pointing a finger at Noah. "You think you’re clever? You think you can use the politicians to bankrupt me? My uncles are furious. They are demanding blood."
"I didn't call the politicians," Noah said honestly, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. "My wife did."
Dante’s face twisted in rage. "You hide behind a woman making dresses?"
"I don't hide behind her, Dante. I stand beside her," Noah’s voice hardened into steel. "And she did in four hours what would have taken me four months and fifty bodies to achieve. You lost. Your accounts are frozen. Your clubs are shut down. Go back to your uncles and tell them the West Side is closed for business."
Dante pulled a gun from his waistband.
The sound of twelve weapons cocking echoed through the cathedral. Paulie and Noah’s men instantly drew their weapons, aiming at Dante's crew. It was a standoff. A powder keg waiting for a single spark.
"You aren't walking out of here, Noah," Dante screamed, his hand shaking. "I kill you, I take back the city, and then I’m going to pay a visit to Bellini Bespoke and burn it to the ground with her inside it."
Noah’s eyes went pitch black. The reformed man died in that fraction of a second.
"If you mention my wife's name again, I will tear your throat out with my bare hands," Noah promised, his voice a demonic whisper.
Dante laughed and prepared to pull the trigger.
Suddenly, the massive wooden doors of the cathedral groaned open.
A blinding spotlight cut through the darkness of the church, illuminating the entire standoff. Sirens wailed outside, deafeningly loud. Red and blue lights flashed through the stained glass windows.
"NYPD! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.
Dante’s men panicked. They looked at the exits, realizing they were completely surrounded by heavily armed SWAT teams.
Noah didn't lower his gun, keeping his eyes locked on Dante.
A figure walked into the cathedral, silhouetted by the police floodlights.
It was Lyra.
She wore a long black trench coat, flanked by DA Reynolds and the Chief of Police. She walked down the aisle with absolute, terrifying composure, the heels of her boots clicking against the stone floor.
"I told you to come home for dinner, Noah," Lyra said, stopping a few feet away from the standoff.
Dante stared at her in shock. "How did you...?"
"You think I dismantled your financial empire without putting a wiretap on your burner phones?" Lyra asked, her tone laced with pity. "The DA has been listening to you plan this ambush for forty-eight hours, Mr. Russo. Attempted murder of a legitimate shipping CEO is a federal offense."
Dante looked at the police, then at Noah, and finally at Lyra. His hand trembled. He knew his life was over.
"Drop it, Dante," Noah said quietly. "Or they will shoot you where you stand."
Defeated, humiliated, and utterly broken, Dante dropped the gun. It clattered against the stone floor.
The police swarmed the altar, tackling Dante and his men, slapping handcuffs on their wrists.
Noah lowered his weapon, clicking the safety on. He looked at Lyra, who was watching him with a mixture of relief and fierce love.
He walked over to her, entirely ignoring the police officers swarming the room. He wrapped his arms around her, burying his face in her neck, breathing in the scent of her perfume.

"You brought the police," Noah whispered, half in disbelief.
"I promised I would always give you a choice," Lyra whispered back, holding him tightly. "I just wanted to make sure you lived long enough to make it."
