Chapter 4: The Little Girl's Secret

Everyone called the flower girl a hero.

But nobody knew the whole story.

One evening, Emily visited the little girl's foster home.

"I still don't understand," Emily admitted.

"Why did my mother trust you?"

The child smiled shyly.

"I visited her every Saturday."

"You did?"

"She said everyone forgot her name."

The little girl reached into her backpack.

She pulled out dozens of handmade birthday cards.

Tiny drawings.

Crayon hearts.

Paper flowers.

"I didn't want her to be lonely."

Emily burst into tears.

Her mother hadn't survived because of medicine alone.

She had survived because one little girl refused to let a stranger feel forgotten.

Emily hugged her tightly.

"You gave me my family back."

The child whispered,

"I think she was waiting for you."
