Chapter 5 - The Woman Gabriel Had Been Told Was Dead

Norah did not run.

There was nowhere to run.

Vincent dragged her through bathroom doorway by arm.

Laptop hit carpet.

Declan Walsh smiled.

He was older than Gabriel by perhaps ten years, silver-haired, elegantly dressed, almost disappointingly ordinary.

“So that's the famous accountant.”

Norah straightened.

“I was hoping you'd be taller.”

Declan blinked.

Gabriel almost laughed despite blood at mouth.

Vincent shoved Norah into chair.

“You think this is funny?”

“No. I think you're overcompensating.”

Gabriel:

“Norah.”

Warning.

She stopped.

Isabella stared at her.

She resembled Gabriel unmistakably, but captivity had changed posture. Thin. Controlled. Eyes alert.

Declan picked up laptop.

“Where is ownership key?”

“Not on that.”

“Where?”

“In my head.”

Lie.

Key was cryptographic.

Stored remotely.

Declan slapped laptop shut.

“Then you'll enter it.”

“No.”

Vincent grabbed Gabriel by injured side.

He grunted.

Norah's stomach twisted.

“Stop.”

Gabriel looked at her.

Don't.

Declan noticed.

“Oh.”

He smiled.

“That's interesting.”

Norah hated him instantly.

“The Marble Prince finally cares about something.”

Gabriel:

“She works for me.”

“Of course.”

Declan turned to Norah.

“Do you know what Gabriel does to employees who betray him?”

“I've seen severance policy.”

“Norah.”

Gabriel again.

She understood.

Keep him focused.

FBI needed time.

If they were coming.

Declan explained version of history.

Salvatore Moretti and Patrick Walsh built Bellweather.

Eleanor Callahan designed system.

But Eleanor later tried forcing both families into legitimate operations by threatening exposure.

Salvatore agreed partially.

Patrick didn't.

Then Eleanor got cancer.

Before death, she placed shares in trust for Norah.

Salvatore promised protect child.

Patrick promised nothing.

Years later Isabella discovered.

She wanted fulfill Eleanor's plan.

Salvatore confined her to prevent war.

“So my father imprisoned his daughter to protect Norah?”

Gabriel asked.

Declan shrugged.

“To protect everyone.”

Isabella finally spoke.

“He was afraid Patrick would kill her.”

Norah looked.

“You knew my mother?”

“No. I found recordings.”

“Recordings?”

“Eleanor documented meetings.”

Declan's expression hardened.

Those recordings were missing evidence.

Isabella had them.

“Where?”

Norah asked.

Isabella smiled faintly.

“Safe.”

Vincent slapped her.

Gabriel surged against restraints.

Chair scraped.

Declan raised gun.

“Enough.”

Then he turned to Norah.

“Activate Bellweather.”

“No.”

“Then Gabriel dies.”

Gabriel said:

“Don't.”

Declan pressed gun beneath Gabriel's jaw.

Norah stared.

Her mind returned to sofa.

His heartbeat beneath cheek.

A man she should have feared becoming first place she had felt safe.

Dangerous feeling.

But she would not trade an empire to save one person.

Not even him.

She looked at clock.

11:21.

Thirty-nine minutes until final transfer.

“Even if I activate, you don't control it.”

“I know.”

“Then what do you want?”

“Dissolution stopped.”

There.

Declan didn't need ownership.

He needed Bellweather to continue because it protected his fortune.

“Why not kill me before midnight?”

“Because your shares pass to federal receivership under Eleanor's trust.”

Norah almost smiled.

Her mother had planned well.

“So you need me alive.”

“For now.”

Gabriel saw leverage too.

Then building fire alarm sounded.

Everyone froze.

Vincent went window.

Street below.

Fire trucks? No.

Declan:

“False alarm.”

Norah knew better.

FBI.

But federal agents wouldn't necessarily use fire alarm? Could.

Hallway erupted in shouting.

Declan grabbed Norah.

Gun at her side.

Vincent pulled Isabella.

Gabriel kicked chair sideways, smashing into Vincent's knees.

Chaos.

Isabella twisted free.

Norah drove elbow backward.

Declan's grip loosened.

Door burst.

“Federal agents!”

Weapons.

Commands.

Norah dropped.

Gabriel hit floor with chair.

Vincent reached gun.

Isabella shouted:

“No!”

Shot cracked.

Vincent fell.

Alive, shoulder hit.

Declan froze with multiple weapons aimed.

It ended strangely fast.

After all fear, final room became procedural.

Hands visible.

Weapons kicked.

Cuffs.

Names.

Medical.

Gabriel cut free.

First thing he did was cross room to Norah.

“You called FBI.”

“Yes.”

He stared.

“You called the FBI.”

“You're repeating yourself.”

“Do you understand what you've done?”

“Saved you?”

Behind him Isabella laughed.

Gabriel turned.

For first time siblings stood face to face without threat between them.

Neither moved.

Then Isabella whispered:

“You got old.”

Gabriel's face broke.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

He crossed room and held her.

Isabella stiffened.

Then wrapped arms around brother.

Norah looked away.

Some reunions deserved privacy even in crowded hotel full of federal agents.

At 11:58, Agent Mara Ellison approached Norah.

“We need decision.”

Bellweather final transfer due midnight.

If Norah did nothing, independent authority activated automatically.

Then she could dissolve.

If Declan's attorneys triggered emergency injunction, delay.

Norah opened secured terminal.

11:59.

Gabriel approached.

“What are you doing?”

“Ending it.”

“Bellweather touches my companies.”

“I know.”

“Thousands of employees.”

“I know.”

“If you dissolve tonight—”

“I'm not.”

He stopped.

Norah had found another option.

Her mother included separation provision.

Independent shareholder could place legitimate assets into temporary employee-benefit trust before Bellweather records entered receivership.

Criminal assets frozen.

Legitimate operating companies protected temporarily under court supervision.

Workers kept jobs.

Owners lost control.

Gabriel read.

“This strips me of voting authority.”

“Yes.”

“My hotels.”

“Temporarily.”

“My shipping companies.”

“Also.”

“You're stealing my empire.”

Norah looked up.

“No. I'm preventing government from burning innocent people with it.”

Midnight.

Final transfer cleared.

Screen changed.

INDEPENDENT CONTROL ACTIVE: NORAH ELEANOR CALLAHAN.

She entered key.

Selected separation.

Then disclosure.

UPLOAD ALL.

Gabriel watched twenty-eight years of secrets leave private servers.

Norah pressed ENTER.

Bellweather opened.

May you like

And by 12:03 a.m., the empire their fathers had spent decades hiding no longer belonged to either family.
