THE BOTTLE UNDER THE BLANKET
“Doctor… what is this medicine for?” she asked softly, her tiny hands trembling as she placed it in his palm.
The hospital room was wrapped in uneasy silence until eight-year-old Lily quietly pulled a small, unmarked pill bottle from beneath her blanket.
The doctor smiled politely, expecting nothing more than an ordinary vitamin bottle.
But the instant he read the faded chemical name on the label…
His smile disappeared. He froze.
The color drained from his face.
“Lily…” he whispered, his voice suddenly tight with concern. “Who gave you this?”
The little girl lowered her eyes.
“My stepmother says they're vitamins. I take one every day… Is something wrong?”
The doctor tightened his grip on the bottle.
“These aren't vitamins.”
He swallowed hard before continuing.
“This medication is designed to dramatically reduce a person's ability to move. It should never be used as a daily supplement.”
Lily's eyes widened.
“Then… why have I been taking it?”
The doctor didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he slowly reached toward the emergency call button beside the bed.
One press…
And the truth might finally come to light.
But at that exact moment—
Click. The hospital door slowly opened.
Her stepmother stepped inside, carrying a freshly poured glass of water and wearing a calm, unreadable smile.
“Is there a problem, Doctor?”
