Chapter 6 - The Night Sofia Was Taken

Veronica was released on bail after a judge ruled that most physical evidence had been collected through disputed searches.
Alexander expected her to flee.
Instead, she held a press conference outside Bellweather House.
She accused him of manufacturing Sofia’s injuries and manipulating Elena.
Her attorney announced Veronica would seek custody as Sofia’s “psychological mother.”
A crowd of supporters gathered.
People who had never met Sofia held signs demanding she be rescued from Alexander.
Sofia saw the news at school.
Another child asked whether her father locked women in basements.
She stopped speaking for the rest of the day.
Alexander withdrew her temporarily and arranged private tutoring.
He worried isolation might make things worse.
Everything felt like the wrong choice.
Elena told him, “You don’t have to make every decision alone.”
“I did for six years.”
“That doesn’t mean you were good at it.”
He almost argued.
Then he saw the faint smile on her face.
It was the first piece of their old rhythm.
They began attending family therapy together.
Elena remembered fragments of their marriage.
The morning Alexander proposed.
The night Sofia was born.
The argument before her disappearance.
She had accused him of becoming like Jonathan because he dismissed concerns about the charitable trust.
Alexander remembered telling her she was imagining conspiracies.
“I should have listened,” he said.
“You should have.”
He did not ask her to soften it.
One rainy evening, the estate alarm failed.
Marcus checked the cameras.
Every screen displayed prerecorded footage.
Alexander ran to Sofia’s room.
The bed was empty.
The window stood open.
A small muddy footprint marked the carpet.
Veronica had taken her.
This time, no ransom message came.
Police searched airports, train stations, and known Vale properties.
Anna found a clue inside Sofia’s pillowcase.
A note written in pencil:
Daddy, the white car came back. I am going to leave letters like Mommy did.
Sofia had seen the kidnappers approaching.
She chose not to scream because she feared Elena would be hurt.
She was thinking strategically.
That terrified Alexander.
A mail carrier found a folded drawing inside a public mailbox.
It showed a white car, three bridges, and a house without mirrors.
Anna recognized it.
Dr. Vale owned a retreat on an island in the Thousand Islands region.
The house had no mirrors because Bellweather treatments taught patients to distrust their own reflections.
Federal agents crossed by boat.
The island appeared empty.
Inside, they found letters taped beneath tables, chairs, and windows.
Sofia had marked her path.
The final letter read:
Daddy, Miss Veronica says you chose Mommy, so now she chooses me. She wants me to call her Mom. I said no.
Alexander pressed the paper to his chest.
A hidden dock showed evidence of a recent departure.
The boat traveled toward Canada.
Authorities traced it to an abandoned resort near the border.
Veronica held Sofia inside the ballroom.
She had arranged cameras, flowers, and a child-sized white dress.
She intended to record a staged adoption ceremony proving Sofia accepted her as mother.
Investors who financed her trust loans were watching remotely.
If the video appeared convincing, they would continue funding her legal battle.
Veronica brushed Sofia’s hair.
“You will say you want to live with me.”
“No.”
“Your father gave away your money.”
“It wasn’t yours.”
Veronica slapped the table beside her.
“Everything I did was for our family.”
“You hurt me.”
“I prepared you.”
“For what?”
“To understand that love has rules.”
Sofia looked at the camera.
“My mommy says love makes you free.”
Veronica’s face twisted.
She raised her hand.
The ballroom doors opened.
Elena stood there.
“Touch her again.”
Veronica froze.
Alexander entered behind her with federal agents hidden in the corridor.
Veronica grabbed Sofia and pressed a glass shard against her throat.
“You stole my life,” she told Elena.
“No. You built your life inside mine.”
“You left him.”
“You kidnapped me.”
“He loved me.”
“He loved the person you performed.”
Veronica looked at Alexander.
“Tell her.”
Alexander did not deny the past.
“I trusted you.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“I thought I loved you.”
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
Alexander continued.
“But love that requires a child’s fear is not love.”
Veronica’s hand shook.
Sofia whispered, “You can stop.”
Veronica looked down.
For one second, her expression softened.
Then she tried to drag Sofia toward the side exit.
Elena moved.
Sofia dropped to the floor.
Alexander caught Veronica’s wrist.
Federal agents pulled the shard away.
Veronica screamed until they carried her from the ballroom.
Sofia ran to Elena first.
Then she reached for Alexander.
They held her between them.
Outside, the river moved beneath a cold gray sky.
May you like
The family had found one another again.
But the court still had to decide whether Alexander deserved to remain Sofia’s father.
