Chapter 4 - Claire’s Last Recording

Daniel moved first.

He pulled Noah and Lily behind one of the archive cabinets while Rachel searched for an emergency exit. Mr. Deveraux rushed toward the locked stairwell door, striking it with his shoulder.

It did not move.

Arthur’s voice came again from above.

“You have no idea what you found.”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

“Then come down here and explain it.”

For a moment, there was silence.

Then Arthur laughed softly.

“You still believe this is about a family dispute. Claire made the same mistake.”

Rachel found a small red box mounted on the wall.

“Fire alarm,” she whispered.

Daniel nodded.

She broke the glass.

The alarm began screaming through the building.

Red lights flashed across the dark archive room.

Mr. Deveraux stepped back from the door as its electronic lock released with a click.

Daniel pushed it open.

The stairwell was empty.

Arthur was gone.

But on the lobby floor above, a security camera lay smashed beside the reception desk.

He had planned the visit.

He had wanted Daniel to know he was being watched.

They returned home before sunrise.

Noah refused to sleep.

He sat at the kitchen table while Rachel connected the small voice recorder from box 317 to her laptop.

“This might be from Mom,” he said.

Daniel placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Do you want to hear it?”

Noah nodded.

Lily sat curled beside him, holding her rabbit tightly.

Rachel pressed play.

At first there was static.

Then Claire’s voice filled the room.

It was softer than Daniel remembered, but unmistakably hers.

“If you are hearing this, Arthur has already made his move.”

Noah covered his mouth.

Lily began to cry.

Claire continued.

“Daniel, I need you to understand that Vanessa did not begin this. She became cruel because Arthur taught her that people are only useful when they can be controlled.”

Daniel exchanged a look with Rachel.

“Arthur wanted Bennett Medical’s research division,” Claire said. “The company had developed a confidential treatment model for children with rare neurological conditions. It was valuable. But more important, our clinical database contained records that could expose Arthur’s illegal trials.”

Daniel froze.

Illegal trials.

Rachel leaned closer to the speaker.

“Arthur used private clinics funded through shell charities,” Claire’s voice continued. “He recruited desperate families and falsified outcomes. When I found the records, I tried to report him.”

A pause.

Then Claire inhaled shakily.

“He threatened Noah and Lily. Vanessa told me that if I went to the authorities, they would make me look unstable and take my children. I believed them because they already had doctors, lawyers, and judges willing to help.”

Daniel looked at Noah.

The boy had gone completely still.

“I hid copies of everything,” Claire said. “I placed the first evidence in box 317. But the most important file is not there. It is held by the only person Arthur cannot control.”

Rachel paused the recording.

“Who?” Daniel asked.

The recording resumed.

“Daniel, if you need the final proof, find Dr. Miriam Shaw. She was the pediatric neurologist who tried to stop Arthur. She disappeared from public life after the investigation was buried.”

The recording ended.

Noah stared at the laptop.

“Mom knew she was going to die.”

Daniel did not know how to answer.

“She knew she was in danger,” Rachel said gently.

Noah’s eyes filled with tears.

“And she still tried to protect us.”

Daniel knelt beside him.

“She never stopped protecting you.”

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel answered.

Vanessa’s voice came through.

“You opened it.”

Daniel said nothing.

“I warned you,” she continued. “My father is not someone you can defeat.”

“You hurt two children.”

“I did what I had to do.”

“No,” Daniel said. “You did what he taught you to do.”

Vanessa was quiet.

Then she spoke in a whisper.

“Daniel, get the children out of the house.”

His grip tightened around the phone.

“What?”

“My father knows where you are.”

“Where are you?”

“Listen to me. I did terrible things. I know that. But Arthur is worse than you understand. He will not let Noah and Lily become witnesses.”

A sound came from outside.

An engine.

Then another.

Daniel moved toward the living-room window.

Two dark SUVs had stopped beyond the gates.

Vanessa’s voice shook.

“Run.”

The call ended.

At the same moment, the first stone shattered the front window.
