Chapter 3 - The File in the Attic

The attic door had not been opened since Claire’s death.

It sat at the end of the upstairs hallway, hidden behind a narrow panel in the ceiling. Ethan remembered storing boxes there after the funeral because he could not bear to sort through them.

Claire’s sweaters.

Her old journals.

The handmade decorations from Lily’s first birthday.

Objects that had become too painful to touch.

Now, with Lily asleep in his bedroom downstairs, Ethan pulled down the attic ladder and climbed into the dust-filled space.

A single bare bulb cast a yellow circle over the boxes.

He found Claire’s handwriting on the third one.

PERSONAL — ETHAN ONLY

His heart began to pound.

Inside were folders, sealed envelopes, and a small silver flash drive taped beneath the lid.

The first envelope was addressed to him.

> Ethan,

> If you ever find this, it means I was not able to tell you the truth myself.

>

> Vanessa was never an accident in our lives. She came close to us because of her father, Victor Hale. He wanted access to the Hart trust and to the land your father left to Lily.

>

> I found documents proving Victor planned to develop the coastal property through illegal permits. When I refused to help, he threatened us.

>

> Please do not trust Vanessa. And please protect Lily.

>

> Love, Claire.

Ethan read the letter twice.

Victor Hale.

Vanessa’s father.

A political donor, real-estate developer, and friend of Ethan’s late father.

Ethan had always considered him arrogant.

He had never considered him dangerous.

The flash drive contained scanned documents.

Land transfer maps.

Emails between Victor and city officials.

Bank records.

Then Ethan found a video file.

The timestamp was from three weeks before Claire’s car accident.

He opened it.

Claire appeared on the screen, sitting in the driver’s seat of her car. Her hair was messy, her eyes red from crying.

“If anything happens to me,” she said, “Victor Hale is responsible.”

Ethan felt the attic close around him.

Claire continued.

“He wants Lily’s inheritance. He believes the coastal land belongs to him because he made a private deal with your father years ago. But your father changed his will before he died. He gave everything to Lily.”

She paused, looking toward the rearview mirror.

“Vanessa knows. She told me she would take Lily from us if I talked.”

The video ended abruptly.

Ethan sat in the dust with the laptop open in front of him.

Claire had known.

She had tried to warn him.

And he had failed to see it.

A small sound came from the attic entrance.

Ethan turned sharply.

Lily stood halfway up the ladder in her pajamas, holding her stuffed fox.

“Daddy?”

He rushed toward her.

“You shouldn’t climb up here alone.”

“I woke up.”

He lifted her gently into his arms.

“Are you okay?”

Lily nodded.

Then she looked at the open box.

“Is that Mommy’s stuff?”

“Yes.”

Lily’s face softened.

“Mommy said she had a treasure place.”

Ethan went still.

“What did she say?”

“She said if she went away, Daddy would find it.”

“Did she tell you where?”

Lily pointed toward the far side of the attic.

“Behind the red suitcase.”

Ethan walked there slowly.

An old red suitcase sat beneath a sheet-covered chair. Behind it was a narrow wooden panel.

He pulled it loose.

Inside was a small metal lockbox.

The key was taped to the back.

In the lockbox was a memory card, a bundle of photographs, and a folded document.

Ethan opened the document.

It was an emergency guardianship petition.

Victor Hale had prepared it two years earlier.

It stated that if Ethan became “financially compromised” or “emotionally unstable,” Lily would be placed under the temporary guardianship of Vanessa Hart.

Ethan felt rage rise in his chest.

They had planned it before he married her.

Before Vanessa moved into the house.

Before she began isolating Lily.

Then he looked at the photographs.

They showed Claire meeting a woman Ethan did not recognize outside a small coastal café.

On the back of one photo, Claire had written:

Mara Chen — knows what Victor did. Find her.

Suddenly, every light in the house flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the power went out.

Lily clung to him.

“Daddy?”

Ethan reached for his phone.

No signal.

Downstairs, the security system began beeping.

But not the ordinary warning chime.

This was the sound of a door opening.

A door that should have been locked.

Ethan pulled Lily close.

In the darkness below, someone was inside the house.
