Chapter 4 - Someone Had Already Planned for Atticus to Die

Nolan denied for four minutes.

Then Cordelia asked:

“Did you know what was in the bag?”

He broke.

“No.”

Atticus sat opposite.

“Did you know Evelyn was fired?”

“No.”

“Did you pick up medication from Vincent?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said Cordelia wanted privacy.”

Cordelia said:

“Everyone keeps using my privacy as permission.”

Nolan looked ashamed.

He admitted knowing cancer.

Vincent told him five months earlier.

Why keep from Atticus?

Because Vincent said disclosure could destabilize leadership while Chicago negotiations underway.

Nolan believed.

At first.

Then succession conversations began.

Vincent told Nolan Atticus was becoming reckless.

True enough.

Men dead.

Deals violent.

But selective truth again.

Nolan was promised legitimate business control after “transition.”

“What transition?”

Atticus asked.

Nolan swallowed.

“If you stepped down.”

Atticus laughed once.

“Did I appear interested?”

“No.”

“So?”

Nolan looked down.

“Vincent said Cordelia's illness would change you.”

There.

“He said you'd either leave everything to take care of her or lose control.”

“And if neither?”

Silence.

Nolan's eyes filled.

“I didn't know Chicago was an ambush.”

Atticus studied him.

“Who arranged meeting?”

“Vincent.”

“Who fed me warehouse-route intel?”

“Me.”

“Where'd you get it?”

“Vincent.”

Every road led same man.

Nolan insisted he thought meeting genuine.

But then Atticus asked:

“Why did you pick up counterfeit infusion?”

Nolan looked sick.

Vincent said Cordelia had become agitated and refused prescribed sedative.

He needed Nolan because pharmacy courier could not be linked to foundation.

Nolan delivered sealed bag to Evelyn.

He never opened.

Could be true.

Then Cordelia asked:

“Why were you emergency contact in my file?”

Nolan stared.

“I didn't know.”

Good surprise.

Maybe.

Atticus watched body language.

Nolan had always been terrible liar.

That made him useful and dangerous.

Then Nolan handed over phone voluntarily.

Messages with Vincent.

Most ordinary.

One stood out.

Vincent:

When A is gone, keep her calm. No signatures unless Bell confirms decline.

Nolan:

She isn't incompetent.

Vincent:

Not yet.

Nolan had pushed back.

Not enough.

But push existed.

Another:

Chicago should resolve leadership issue.

Nolan:

What does that mean?

No answer.

That message scared him only after Atticus returned alive.

Nolan said:

“I started thinking…”

“You started thinking after?”

“Yes.”

Cowardice.

Not mastermind.

Atticus wanted to punish.

Cordelia wanted information.

They chose information.

Nolan agreed cooperate.

Damon secured him away from Vincent's surveillance.

Then external financial review found Vincent had been siphoning from Graham Holdings for years.

Not huge at first.

Two percent.

Consulting.

Legal.

Security subcontractors.

Then more.

Nearly $38 million.

He feared Atticus discovering during Chicago route restructuring because consolidated books were coming.

Cordelia's cancer gave opportunity.

If Atticus's focus shifted, audit delayed.

If Atticus died, Vincent buried it.

If Cordelia controlled estate while weak, signatures manageable.

He did not cause cancer.

He exploited it.

That distinction somehow made Atticus angrier.

Cancer was random cruelty.

Vincent was chosen cruelty.

Then another discovery.

Three dead men in Chicago were connected to Vincent through shell intermediary.

They had received advance details of Atticus's arrival.

Parking structure.

Vehicle.

Bodyguard count.

But Atticus changed plane and arrived early.

Survival by paranoia.

Their orders recovered from phone:

If Graham refuses revised route split, eliminate.

Who paid?

Crypto trail difficult.

But linked wallet received funds from company controlled by Vincent's brother-in-law.

Enough.

Police could pursue conspiracy if evidence held.

Atticus faced choice.

Handle internally.

Or turn over.

His instinct:

Vincent disappears.

No trial.

No exposure.

Cordelia said:

“No.”

They were in bedroom.

Atticus stared.

“You don't get to say no to this.”

“I absolutely do when he's involved my treatment.”

“He tried to kill us.”

“Then let evidence bury him.”

“Our world doesn't work that way.”

“Maybe that's the problem.”

Atticus walked away.

Cordelia followed slowly.

“You want to protect organization?”

“Yes.”

“From law?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He turned.

“Because if everything opens, hundreds of people fall.”

“Criminal people.”

“Some.”

“Employees too?”

“Yes.”

Ports.

Trucking.

Restaurants.

Warehouses.

People whose paychecks were legal even if ownership dirty.

A collapse could harm innocents.

Cordelia understood.

But:

“If you murder Vincent, what changes?”

“He stops.”

“And next Vincent?”

Atticus said nothing.

Cordelia continued.

“You built a system where loyalty has no audit.”

“You trust men until they betray you, then punish betrayal.”

“That's not governance.”

“That's fear.”

He almost laughed.

“My wife is giving management lecture while on chemo.”

“Yes.”

She sat.

“Maybe surviving cancer made me rude.”

He knelt in front of her.

“You have to survive it first.”

Her face softened.

“I'm trying.”

That sentence broke him more than any threat.

He rested forehead against her knees.

She touched his hair.

Then Atticus whispered:

“I don't know how to lose you.”

“You don't practice.”

“What?”

“Don't start grieving me while I'm here.”

He looked up.

She was crying.

“So we deal with Vincent.”

“And cancer.”

“One at a time.”

“Both are terrible multitaskers.”

She smiled.

Then phone rang.

Dr. Bell.

New pathology review.

Cordelia's cancer had a targetable marker not emphasized in initial report.

A newer therapy might be appropriate.

Not miracle.

Chance.

Atticus listened.

Then noticed Bell sounding hesitant.

“What?”

Bell said:

“The original pathology report in our system is incomplete.”

“How?”

“Someone replaced scanned page.”

Atticus went still.

The missing page contained receptor testing.

Why would anyone remove treatment-relevant information?

Bell said:

“I don't know.”

Cordelia stared.

If therapy option had been delayed because file was altered—

Vincent's plan might have included something darker.

Not giving her cancer.

May you like

But making sure she stayed sick enough.
