Chapter 10 - Sunrise Over the Fortress

Six months later.
The morning sun broke over the Lake Forest estate, casting a brilliant golden light across the manicured lawns and clear blue fountains. The heavy bulletproof glass windows of the east wing were wide open, letting in the sweet, warm breeze of early summer.
Inside the grand living room, the dark, oppressive furniture had been replaced with bright, modern decor. The smell of sterile alcohol wipes and stale air was completely gone, replaced by the scent of fresh cut lilies and rich espresso.
A tall man stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a porcelain cup of coffee.
He was dressed in a crisp, tailored navy suit. He wore no wheelchair. He leaned lightly on a sleek, silver headed cane, his shoulders broad, his posture commanding and magnificent.
Diamond Kelly took a slow sip of his coffee, looking out over his domain.
Behind him, soft footsteps clicked lightly against the polished marble floor.
Caprice walked out from the hallway, wearing a stunning white silk dress that draped elegantly over her slender frame. Her hair was styled in soft waves, her skin glowing with health, joy, and peace. There were no dark circles under her eyes anymore; the exhaustion that had once defined her life was a distant memory.
She walked up beside him, wrapping her arm gently around his waist, resting her head against his shoulder.
"The surgeon from Zurich just called," Caprice said, her voice rich with happiness. "Your nerve regeneration scans from yesterday are eighty percent clear. He said you won't even need the cane by the end of the year."
Diamond set his coffee cup down on the windowsill and turned to face her, wrapping his arm securely around her waist, pulling her close against his chest.
"I don't mind the cane," Diamond smiled, his dark eyes filled with a deep, boundless warmth. "It gives me an excuse to walk slow enough so you can keep up with me."
Caprice laughed—a light, musical sound that filled the bright room. "I used to run six miles a day between bus stops, Mr. Kelly. You're the one who needs to keep up."
Diamond looked down at her face, his thumb gently tracing the faint, healed scar on her shoulder—the mark from the night she had saved his life in the garage.
After the raid, Diamond’s loyal security forces had completely purged the remaining traitors from the organization. The syndicate had been restructured into legitimate international logistics enterprises, leaving the bloody street wars behind forever. Diamond had financed a revolutionary neuro-spine surgery in Switzerland, driven by a fierce, unrelenting desire to walk beside the woman who had given him back his soul.
"Mrs. Higgins asked if we need extra staff for the evening banquet," Caprice mentioned softly, looking up into his eyes.
"We have enough staff," Diamond murmured, leaning down until his lips were inches from hers. "As long as none of them try to clean my study at three in the morning."
"I don't know," Caprice teased gently, wrapping her arms around his neck. "I heard night cleaners are very persistent. Especially the tired ones."
"I only hire one night cleaner," Diamond whispered against her lips. "And I made her the boss."

His mouth covered hers in a slow, deep, passionate kiss that tasted of sweet summer and new beginnings.
Outside, the sun rose higher over the fortress, illuminating a world that was no longer a tomb or a prison, but a home filled with light, power, and an unshakeable love born in the darkest hours of the night.
