Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Checkmate

Sloan dropped her phone. It hit the plush carpet with a dull thud. The color drained from her face, leaving her looking like a terrified, trapped animal.
"Sloan Mercer," the lead agent said, stepping into the room with handcuffs already drawn. "You are under arrest for federal extortion, wire fraud, and severe violation of your parole conditions."
"No! No, please!" Sloan sobbed, backing away until she hit the wall. "It was Preston! He made me do it! He gave me the money! He’s running it from prison!"
"We know," the agent replied coldly as he forcefully turned her around and locked the heavy steel cuffs around her wrists. "The Department of Justice raided Mr. Whitmore’s cell an hour ago. We recovered the burner phone and the crypto ledgers. He has been transferred to maximum security. Hiding assets from a federal seizure carries an additional ten-year mandatory minimum sentence. He won't be seeing the outside world for a very, very long time."
Sloan collapsed to her knees, weeping hysterically, her cheap designer dress pooling around her. The grand revenge she had plotted for three years had evaporated in less than five minutes. She had walked directly into a trap set by a woman whose intellect she could never hope to match.
Natalie walked over to where Sloan was sobbing on the floor. She looked down at the mistress, feeling absolutely no anger, no sorrow, and no pity. She felt nothing at all.
"You thought you could come back and take my peace," Natalie said, her voice echoing with cold, absolute finality. "But you forgot the most important rule of business, Sloan. Never gamble with capital you can't afford to lose."
The federal agents hauled a screaming, thrashing Sloan out of the VIP suite and into the service elevators, completely bypassing the gala below. The threat was neutralized. The final loose end of Preston Whitmore’s toxic legacy had been permanently severed.
Natalie walked back to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at the glittering ballroom. The music was playing, the champagne was flowing, and the elite of New York were celebrating the incredible success of Whitmore-Sterling. Her company. Her empire.
Her phone buzzed in her velvet clutch. It was a text from her nanny.
Maya just fell asleep. She wanted me to tell you she loves you.

A genuine, radiant smile broke across Natalie’s face. The ice in her veins melted, replaced by the overwhelming, profound warmth of a mother’s love. She had faced monsters, billionaires, and betrayal, and she had crushed them all into dust.
Natalie picked up her clutch and walked out of the suite, heading back down to the ballroom. She was a billionaire CEO. She was a mother. She was the architect of her own destiny, and as she stepped back into the blinding lights of her charity gala, she knew with absolute certainty that she and her daughter were going to live happily ever after.
