Chapter 6 - The Domino Effect

The arrest of Ethan Cole, Brandon Hale, and Tyler Whitmore dominated news headlines across the entire country for three consecutive days.

What had begun as a typical attempt by rich families to suppress a violent assault on a college campus had turned into the largest political and corporate corruption scandal the state had seen in four decades.

Richard Cole's construction firm was stripped of all public contracts, leading to an immediate federal indictment for bribery and racketeering. Arthur Whitmore's investment firm was placed under emergency receivership by the Securities and Exchange Commission after massive tax evasion schemes were uncovered. And former Senator Evelyn Hale was facing formal grand jury charges for public corruption.

Without their parents' money and political influence to shield them, the three boys were held without bail at the county detention facility, awaiting trial on charges of aggravated first-degree assault, hate crime enhancements, and conspiracy to tamper with evidence.

I spent my days sitting beside Lily's bed as her recovery progressed.

The doctors performed a delicate reconstructive surgery on her jaw, securing the fractures with small titanium plates. The surgeon stepped into the room on Tuesday morning, looking over her latest scans with a satisfied smile.

"Mr. Walker, the alignment is nearly perfect," the doctor explained. "The swelling has reduced by sixty percent. In another three weeks, we can remove the external wires, and she will be able to speak normally again."

Lily let out a soft sigh of relief, squeezing my hand tightly.

"Thank you, Doctor," I said warmly.

After the medical team left, Marcus entered the room carrying a fresh box of organic fruit juice and a stack of mail.

"How are we doing today, little lady?" Marcus asked Lily, giving her a gentle, grandfatherly smile.

Lily gave a thumbs-up sign, her eyes bright with gratitude. She had grown very fond of Marcus over the past week, sensing the deep loyalty he carried for our family.

"I brought the latest update from the prosecutor's office," Marcus said quietly to me as we stepped near the window. "The defense attorneys for the three boys tried to request a plea bargain this morning. They offered three years in a minimum-security facility."

"What did the District Attorney say?" I asked.

"The DA turned it down flat," Marcus grinned. "The public outrage is too massive. The DA knows if he gives those kids anything less than ten years in maximum security, his career is over. They're going to trial, and they're going as adults."

"Good," I said softly. "The system is finally working the way it's supposed to."

"There's one more thing, boss," Marcus added, his expression turning serious. "Richard Cole's brother, Dominic Cole, just flew in from Chicago."

I narrowed my eyes slightly. "Dominic?"

"He runs a high-level private security firm out of Illinois," Marcus explained. "Mostly ex-military guys who do black-budget contract work. Dominic is furious about what happened to his brother's business. He brought four guys with him, and they're currently asking around campus, trying to figure out who pulled off the technical hacks against the university server."

"Dominic thinks this was a rival mob hit," I realized. "He doesn't believe a simple father could pull this off."

"He's staying at the Grand Park Hotel downtown," Marcus said. "Do you want me to have the team handle him before he gets close to the hospital?"

I looked back at Lily, who was busy practicing her handwriting on a notebook, looking peaceful and secure.

"No," I said quietly. "Dominic Cole wants to find the man behind the curtain. Let's make sure he finds him in a place where no one else gets hurt."
