Chapter 9 - The Company Built on Poisoned Dirt

Holloway Development collapsed in stages.

First the lenders froze funds.

Then investors demanded disclosures.

Then Cedarbrook contracts were suspended.

Then workers filed complaints.

Then the environmental findings became public.

Grant called it a political attack.

Then the former foreman released a sworn statement.

Grant called him disgruntled.

Then the inventory records matched the can used in my attack.

Grant stopped giving interviews.

Mother moved out of their house within a month, not because she suddenly became brave, but because Grant’s anger had lost its polish and she finally saw what it looked like when no cameras were around.

She asked to meet me through her attorney.

I refused twice.

The third time, Dad said, “You do not owe her a meeting. But you may owe yourself an answer.”

So I went.

Not alone.

Elise came.

Mother looked older.

No pearls.

No perfect coat.

Just a gray sweater and shaking hands.

“I lied at the hospital,” she said.

“Yes.”

“I lied in court until I couldn’t.”

“Yes.”

“I let him hurt you.”

“Yes.”

Each yes landed harder than shouting.

She cried.

I watched.

Not coldly.

Carefully.

“I thought if Grant fell, everything I had built would fall,” she said.

“What did you build?”

She looked confused.

“The house. The life. The respect.”

I leaned forward.

“You built a room where your daughter could be attacked, then asked her to lie so the curtains stayed pretty.”

She covered her face.

“I know.”

Maybe she did.

Maybe she only knew because the curtains were already burning.

Either way, I did not forgive her that day.

I did ask one question.

“Why did you tell me Dad abandoned me?”

Her answer was small.

Cruel in its smallness.

“Because you loved him.”

That was all.

Not because he was dangerous.

Not because he failed.

Because I loved him, and she wanted to be the only parent left standing.

I left the meeting with grief so old it felt fossilized.

Dad waited outside.

When he saw my face, he opened his arms.

May you like

This time, I went to him without hesitation.
