Citizen

Chapter 7 - A New DawnThree weeks later, the morning sun poured through the wide windows of our new home—a quiet, sunlit house on the edge of the city, far away from the memories of the old neighborhood and the shadows of Evelyn’s manipulation.

There were no hidden safes behind bookcases. No locked study doors. No whispered conspiracies in the hallway.

In the backyard, Lily sat on a wooden swing hanging from a sturdy oak tree, laughing as the morning breeze lifted her hair. Her medical bracelet gleamed softly in the sunlight, but today it was just a precaution, not a reminder of fear.

Mai was in the kitchen, preparing a family breakfast, the sweet aroma of fresh pancakes and cinnamon drifting through the house.

I stood on the back porch with a cup of coffee in my hand, watching Lily soar higher on the swing, her bright voice echoing across the lawn.

“Dad! Come push me!” she called out, flashing a smile that looked so much like her mother’s it made my heart ache with a sweet, healing sorrow.

“Coming!” I called back, setting my coffee cup down on the wooden railing.

I walked down the steps, across the green grass, and caught the swing at the peak of its arc, pushing her gently toward the open sky. The past was behind us—etched into court records and prison walls where it belonged. The future belonged to us, bright, safe, and entirely our own.
