Chapter 9 - The Final VerdictAt the same time, in the preliminary courtroom at the downtown courthouse, the atmosphere was thick with tension and strict solemnity.

The trial had drawn immense media attention due to the shocking details involving financial conspiracy, manslaughter, and child endangerment within an upper-class family. Standing at the defendant's podium, Evelyn Hart no longer wore the arrogant, haughty look she once flaunted in expensive designer suits. She wore a drab grey prisoner’s jumpsuit, her silver hair loose and exhausted, her face hollowed out after days of confinement in the detention center.

Not far away, Michael sat hunched over in the co-defendant’s box. His eyes darted around, searching for salvation from the lawyers who once took his money, but they all kept a cold, professional distance.

The presiding judge, a middle-aged man with sharp eyes and a deep, steady voice, held the judgment in his hands, slowly reading every single ruling before the panel.

"Based on supplementary investigation documents, medical expert reports from independent forensic agencies, recorded audio evidence, and verified testimonies from the co-defendants..."

The courtroom fell into absolute silence. Even the clacking sound of reporters taking notes slowed down.

"...The trial panel sentences defendant Evelyn Hart to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the charges of masterminding attempted murder, grand larceny of trust assets, forgery of legal documents, and obstruction of justice."

Murmurs rippled across the courtroom. Evelyn swayed slightly, her hands gripping the wooden railing tightly, her trembling lips unable to form words. More than anyone, she understood that the glorious life of power and prestige she had built on falsehoods had utterly collapsed without a way back.

The judge turned a cold gaze toward Michael:

"As for defendant Michael Hart, considering his sincere confession, cooperation with the investigation, and provision of core evidence that helped expose the entire criminal network, the panel sentences him to fifteen years in prison for complicity in financial fraud and concealing crimes."

Michael burst into tears, burying his face in his hands over the defense table. Late remorse could no longer undo the damage he had caused to his own older brother and flesh-and-blood niece.

As two judicial officers stepped forward to handcuff them both and lead them out through the back door, Evelyn glanced back at the spectator gallery one last time. In her eyes, there was no longer sharpness or hostility, only the cold emptiness of someone who had lost everything.

Outside, brilliant midday sunlight shone down upon the courthouse's granite steps. The dark drama had finally drawn its curtain forever.
