Chapter 3 - Echoes in the Basement

The gas chromatography machine hummed rhythmically, printing out a series of complex molecular spike graphs on the thermal paper roll.

I leaned over the output tray, tracing the chemical peaks with my pen. "Organophosphate derivate... combined with a fluorinated lipid shell. It's a military-grade neurotoxin known as Thalium-B7."

"Military grade?" Vincent asked, standing by the door with Frank, his chief of security.

"It was developed twenty years ago for covert operations," I explained, turning to face them. "It builds up in the fatty tissues around nerve endings. In small doses, it causes gradual paralysis and respiratory depression. The reason your sons are still alive is that the dosage was kept intentionally low to make the death look entirely natural."

"Who manufactures it?" Frank asked, his hand resting on his leather holster.

"It's banned internationally," I replied. "Only three private pharmaceutical laboratories in North America have the raw precursors to synthesize it legally for research. One of them is Blake Biomedical Research in Boston."

Vincent let out a dark, breathless laugh. "Dr. Harrison Blake's private firm."

"Yes," I confirmed. "And here is the most critical part: Thalium-B7 requires a specialized lipid dissolving catalyst to stay liquid in an HVAC misting unit. That catalyst has a shelf life of less than forty-eight hours at room temperature. That means whoever is administering this poison has to manually refill the reservoir inside the ventilation shaft every two days."

Vincent turned to Frank instantly. "When was the last time someone accessed the central HVAC maintenance hub in the sub-basement?"

Frank pulled out a digital access log tablet, scrolling rapidly through the encrypted entry records. His face suddenly went pale.

"Yesterday morning at 4:00 AM," Frank reported. "The keycard used belonged to the estate's internal utility account."

"Which Mrs. Harper has access to," I added.

"Bring her down to the holding room," Vincent commanded coldly.

Ten minutes later, we descended the cold concrete stairs into the estate's sub-basement. The air down here was damp and smelled of old stone and iron.

Mrs. Harper was sitting on a metal chair in the center of a windowless room, guarded by two immovable men in dark suits. Her apron was gone, and her gray hair was disheveled.

When Vincent stepped into the room, she burst into hysterical tears.

"Mr. Moretti! I swear on my mother's soul, I didn't know!" she wept, clutching a crumpled tissue. "I was just following instructions!"

Vincent walked up to her, his shadow completely swallowing her small frame. He didn't raise his hand, nor did he raise his voice. His presence alone was an overwhelming pressure.

"Instructions from whom, Evelyn?" Vincent asked smoothly.

"Dr. Blake!" she sobbed. "He told me it was an experimental air purifier! He said the boys had a rare airborne allergy and that the medicine needed to be vaporized through the vents at night! He paid me five thousand dollars a month to pour the blue bottle into the tank every Tuesday and Friday!"

I stepped forward. "Where are the empty bottles, Mrs. Harper?"

She looked up at me with wide, terrified eyes. "In... in the old coal incinerator room behind the wine cellar. I hid them in a burlap sack under the floorboards like he told me to!"

Frank immediately signaled two guards, who bolted out of the room toward the coal furnace.

"Did anyone else know about this?" Vincent asked, his voice dropping into a register that made the concrete floor seem to vibrate. "Did my cousin Julian know?"

Mrs. Harper froze. Her crying stopped instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated terror.

"Julian..." she whispered, her lips trembling. "Mr. Julian brought the bottles from Boston every two weeks. He said if I ever told you... he would kill my grandson."

Vincent went dead still.

Julian Moretti was Vincent's first cousin and the vice president of the family's logistics and shipping empire.

The betrayal was complete. It wasn't just an outside doctor trying to earn a paycheck. It was an internal coup within the Moretti syndicate itself—a systematic execution of Vincent's entire bloodline to seize control of the billion-dollar criminal and corporate empire.
