Chapter 5 - The Traitor’s Footsteps

By 1:00 AM, a convoy of three dark armored SUVs was tearing through the heavy rain along Interstate 90 toward Boston.
I sat in the back seat of the lead vehicle beside Vincent. The rain lashed furiously against the bulletproof glass, reflecting the red taillights of the highway traffic.
Vincent was working quietly on his encrypted tablet computer, reviewing financial transfers and security feeds provided by his intelligence team.
"Julian turned over six million dollars to Dr. Blake's offshore account in the Cayman Islands over the past eight months," Vincent said, his voice flat as he pointed at the screen. "In exchange, Blake fabricated the medical reports and provided the synthetic toxin."
"And what was Julian's ultimate goal?" I asked, leaning closer to look at the screen.
"When a syndicate leader dies without an adult heir, the council of elders steps in to appoint a regent," Vincent explained, the scent of expensive cedar and rain radiating from his jacket. "If Lucas and Leo had died from 'natural causes' following my wife's death, Julian would have been next in line to inherit control of the entire shipping network and property portfolio. He was clearing the board."
My heart heavy, I looked out the rain-slicked window. "How can someone do that to seven-year-old children? To his own family?"
"Greed makes monsters out of ordinary men, Claire," Vincent replied quietly. He paused, setting the tablet aside, his dark eyes fixing on my profile. "Why did you become a forensic nurse?"
I let out a soft, breathy laugh. "My father was an industrial chemist. When I was twelve, a local factory illegally dumped chemical waste into our town's water supply. Dozens of people got sick, including my younger sister. The company hired expensive lawyers and doctors who claimed it was just a seasonal flu virus."
Vincent listened intently, his attention completely locked onto me.
"Nobody believed my father when he said the water tasted sweet," I continued softly. "He spent his entire life savings testing the soil himself until he proved the contamination. He saved my sister's life, but he died of stress and exhaustion two years later. I decided then that I would never let another family be destroyed because someone in power lied about a poison."
Vincent reached across the leather seat between us, his big hand covering mine. He didn't say a word, but the strength in his grip spoke louder than any grand declaration.
"We are ten minutes from Blake's facility, Boss," Frank called out from the front passenger seat, pulling a heavy black sidearm from his shoulder holster and checking the chamber.
"Is the perimeter team in position?" Vincent asked, his tone shifting instantly back to the ruthless strategist.
"Yes," Frank replied. "Julian Moretti's personal vehicle was just spotted entering the underground parking garage of the research center five minutes ago."
My breath hitched. "Julian is there right now?"
Vincent pulled a sleek black weapon from his own coat, his face hardening into absolute stone.
"He's meeting Blake to collect his final payment," Vincent said, his dark eyes flashing with lethal anticipation. "They think my sons are dying tonight. They're waiting to celebrate."

He looked at me, his fingers tightening around mine one last time before letting go.
"Stay behind Frank when we enter, Claire," Vincent commanded. "You get the Pralidoxime. I will handle my family."
