Chapter 7 - GRANT STOPPED TRYING TO MAKE UP FIVE YEARS IN ONE MONTH
Guilt made Grant excessive.
Naturally.
He cancelled travel.
Moved meetings home.
Bought books about hearing loss.
Took sign-language lessons four nights a week.
Attended every therapy session.
Asked seventy questions at every appointment.
After three weeks, Evan started hiding when Grant entered the therapy room.
Grace finally confronted him.
“You’re doing it again.”
Grant stared.
“Doing what?”
“Making Evan carry your feelings.”
His expression hardened.
“I am trying to be involved.”
“You are trying to recover five years in three weeks.”
“That’s not possible.”
“Exactly.”
He went quiet.
Grace continued:
“He doesn’t need a guilty father staring at him every second waiting for progress.”
“What does he need?”
“A father.”
Simple.
Painful.
So Grant changed again.
He attended important appointments.
Not every minute.
He learned to play.
To sit nearby without turning everything into therapy.
To speak even when Evan might not hear every word.
To sign badly and let Evan correct him.
To read bedtime books while pointing to pictures.
Some nights Evan paid attention.
Some nights he turned away.
Grant stayed anyway.
