Chapter 9 - EVAN WENT TO SCHOOL
At six, Evan started at a school equipped to support children with hearing differences while learning alongside other students.
On the first morning, Grant nearly ruined everything.
He checked the backpack three times.
Hearing-device batteries.
Water.
Emergency contact card.
Lunch.
Backup communication card.
Grace finally took the backpack from him.
“He’s going to kindergarten, not crossing Antarctica.”
Grant looked offended.
“The weather changes.”
“In Connecticut?”
“Yes.”
Grace handed the backpack to Evan.
Evan signed:
Dad nervous.
Grace laughed.
“Very.”
Grant signed back:
Dad fine.
Evan shook his head.
Then said aloud, slowly:
“Dad… not fine.”
Grace laughed so hard she had to turn away.
Grant stared.
“That was unnecessarily accurate.”
Evan grinned.
Then walked toward the classroom without looking back.
Grant stood in the hallway.
This time, letting his son walk away did not feel like abandonment.
