Chapter 7 - Someone Tried to Erase Elena a Second Time

Deleting corporate records was not same as destroying them.
Grant had backups.
Preston should have known.
Daniel believed deletion served another purpose.
“Distraction.”
From what?
They learned next morning.
The Bridgeport storage facility burned overnight.
Fire department contained blaze, but Unit 318 was destroyed.
Fortunately police had removed critical evidence.
Still, someone had tried eliminate remaining materials.
Investigators traced suspicious vehicle near facility to Harrington contractor.
Preston denied involvement.
Then Elena's secure guest cottage alarm activated at 2:13 a.m.
Daniel reached first.
Back window broken.
No intruder inside.
On kitchen table lay photograph.
Ruth and Thomas Hart standing outside old Massachusetts home.
Across photograph written:
THE DEAD SHOULD STAY BURIED.
Elena stared.
“That's not threat against me.”
Daniel understood.
“They're threatening your parents' memory.”
“Why?”
“Fear.”
She laughed without humor.
“What can they do? They're dead.”
“Damage graves. Release lies. Fabricate records.”
Elena's face changed.
Her parents had given her identity.
Preston could not steal childhood again.
She moved into main house despite hating idea.
Grant increased security.
Vivian's bedroom was next to hers.
First night Elena couldn't sleep.
At 3 a.m. she found Vivian kitchen eating ice cream directly from carton.
Elena stared.
“Billionaires don't own bowls?”
Vivian handed second spoon.
They sat.
“Did I like chocolate?”
“You hated it.”
Elena looked at spoon.
“Well, kidnapping improved my taste.”
Vivian choked laughing.
Then both went quiet.
“Tell me something ordinary.”
“About you?”
“Yes. Not disappearance.”
Vivian thought.
“You loved frogs.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Absolutely not.”
“You put one in Grant's bed.”
Elena smiled.
“That sounds believable.”
“He screamed.”
“Better.”
Grant entered kitchen in sweatpants.
“What are you telling her?”
“Frog.”
He pointed at mother.
“Propaganda.”
For twenty minutes they were not victim, billionaire, grieving mother.
Just family around ice cream.
Elena realized recovery might be made of moments that small.
Next day she made decision.
She would claim trust.
Not for luxury.
Because refusing it would leave Preston benefiting from crime.
“I want every dollar traced.”
Her attorney nodded.
“And after?”
“I decide.”
Grant smiled.
“Now you sound like Whitmore.”
“Don't ruin it.”
Forensic team reconstructed transfers.
Harrington entities owed trust hundreds millions with interest.
Civil freeze orders hit Preston's accounts.
Board members panicked.
Harrington Capital stock plunged after investigation became public.
Preston appeared on television.
He called allegations “fiction manufactured by Whitmore family to destroy competitor.”
Then made mistake.
He said:
“I never met Elena Hart before this month.”
Detective Brooks already possessed old visitor log from New Horizons.
P. Harrington signed in six days before Elena's adoption.
His denial became evidence.
Pressure mounted.
Celeste requested formal cooperation agreement.
She surrendered father's private files.
Among them, recordings.
Preston recorded business meetings obsessively.
One audio from twenty-four years ago.
Richard Whitmore speaking with Preston before disappearance.
Richard:
“You will not control Elizabeth's shares.”
Preston:
“She is seven.”
Richard:
“She is a beneficiary. Her age doesn't make her property yours.”
Preston:
“You would sink company for sentimental trust document?”
Richard:
“I would burn company down before I let you steal from my children.”
Five days later Elizabeth vanished.
Richard died twelve years later still believing daughter might return.
Elena listened alone.
She had no memory of father beyond vague smell of cedar and newspaper.
Grant gave her his watch.
“Dad's.”
“I can't take that.”
“He wanted you to have something when you came home.”
“You don't know that.”
“I do.”
“How?”
“Because he left box.”
Grant retrieved wooden box from safe.
Inside letters.
One for every birthday Elizabeth missed.
Eight.
Nine.
Ten.
Eighteen.
Twenty-one.
Thirty.
Richard wrote even after doctors told him hope unhealthy.
On her eighteenth:
Ellie, if you are alive, I hope whoever has loved you did it well. I hope you do not spend your life trying to return to us. I hope you have a life worth staying in.
Elena cried.
Her biological father had never asked imaginary daughter to belong to him.
He hoped she had been loved elsewhere.
She read all letters over two nights.
Then visited Harts' graves with Vivian and Grant.
No cameras.
No press.
She placed flowers.
“This is my mom and dad.”
Vivian nodded.
“Yes.”
Elena looked.
“You really mean that?”
“Yes.”
Then Vivian touched own chest.
“And I'm your mother too, if you'll let me be.”
Elena took hand.
“I'm trying.”
“That's enough.”
Back in Connecticut, prosecutors prepared charges against Preston for kidnapping conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, evidence tampering and possible involvement in Marjorie's death pending proof.
But Preston disappeared.
His private jet remained grounded.
Passport flagged.
Daniel suspected he hadn't left state.
Then Celeste received message from burner phone.
YOU DID THIS. MEET ME WHERE IT STARTED OR I RELEASE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU.
Attached coordinates.
Lake Waramaug.
Old Whitmore cottage.
Celeste told police.
For once, immediately.
They set controlled operation.
But Preston never appeared at meeting time.
Instead another message went to Elena.
A photograph of Grant entering Whitmore Global headquarters that morning.
Caption:
ONE CHILD FOR ANOTHER. YOUR MOTHER CAN LOSE TWICE.
Elena's blood froze.
Grant's phone stopped responding.
Security said he had left building through underground garage after receiving call apparently from Vivian.
Vivian had made no call.
Someone had lured him out.
Twenty-four years after Preston stole Elizabeth to control company, he had taken Grant.
This time Elena wasn't seven.
May you like
And she wasn't going to disappear quietly.
