Chapter 8 - Grant Called Off the Wedding Before Three Hundred Witnesses

Police found Grant's abandoned SUV near Merritt Parkway.

No blood.

Phone on driver's seat.

Security driver unconscious nearby but alive after being struck during ambush.

Daniel wanted Elena locked inside estate.

She refused to interfere with police but also refused panic.

“Preston wants something.”

Detective Brooks:

“Trust claim.”

Exactly.

Two hours later call came.

Preston's voice.

“You've caused extraordinary damage.”

Elena sat beside detective while call recorded.

“You kidnapped your former partner's son.”

“Grant came willingly.”

“Then put him on phone.”

Silence.

Grant's voice:

“Elena, don't sign anything.”

Then impact sound.

Elena gripped table.

Preston:

“You will instruct trustees to withdraw claims against Harrington entities. You will issue statement saying identity case is fraudulent.”

“No.”

Vivian stared.

Preston paused.

“You think I'm bluffing?”

“No. I think if I give you what you want, Grant becomes witness you can't release.”

Detective Brooks looked impressed.

Elena continued.

“So you don't want documents. You want time.”

Silence.

She had hit something.

Preston needed escape.

Financial freeze prevented access.

He wanted claims withdrawn to unlock accounts.

“Twenty-four years ago you were a frightened child,” Preston said.

“And you still needed three adults to beat me.”

His breathing changed.

“Your mother should have accepted you were dead.”

Elena's voice became ice.

“That's what bothers you most, isn't it? She didn't.”

Preston disconnected.

Call trace narrowed to western Connecticut.

Daniel analyzed background audio.

A bell.

Freight train.

Water.

Old Harrington paper mill property near Housatonic River.

Police mobilized.

Elena stayed command center despite every instinct.

This was not movie.

Running into hostage scene would help no one.

Hours stretched.

Then Daniel's team located Grant.

Preston had moved before raid, but left evidence.

Grant escaped? Better dramatic but plausible. Grant had loosened old pipe bracket and fought guard, then triggered fire alarm? Let's tell via rescue.

Police found Grant inside locked maintenance room after hearing alarm he activated by breaking sprinkler valve with metal chair leg.

Preston fled through service tunnel.

Grant had bruised face, fractured wrist.

Alive.

Vivian cried when video call came.

Elena:

“You look terrible.”

Grant:

“Family trait.”

“Don't joke.”

“You started it.”

He was transported hospital.

Preston remained fugitive another thirty-six hours.

Then arrested at small private marina attempting board fishing vessel using false identification.

No glamorous escape.

A wet, exhausted seventy-four-year-old man in borrowed jacket.

Sometimes villains end small.

Grant returned Whitmore House four days later.

The engagement party ballroom remained partially closed since police investigation.

Celeste requested meeting.

Grant agreed.

Elena didn't attend.

Later he told her.

Celeste apologized.

Not elegantly.

She admitted she suspected Elena's identity before party.

Preston convinced her that if Vivian recognized Elena, old crimes would surface and Harrington family collapse.

Celeste had chosen family reputation over innocent woman.

Then when fake theft began, she let cruelty carry her farther.

“Why tear her uniform?” Grant asked.

Celeste looked ashamed.

“Because she wouldn't act afraid of me.”

That was truth.

Elena's refusal to submit enraged her.

Celeste wanted hierarchy restored.

Grant removed engagement ring from desk drawer.

“You loved power more than you loved me.”

Celeste cried.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

That was harder than denial.

“But love that requires me to ignore who you hurt isn't enough.”

He ended engagement permanently.

Celeste later pleaded guilty to evidence tampering, conspiracy to falsely accuse, and related charges under cooperation agreement. She avoided longest sentence due assistance against father but lost career, board seats, reputation.

Grant refused public revenge.

At Whitmore Global annual meeting, reporters expected speech destroying Harringtons.

He said only:

“My former engagement is a private matter. Criminal allegations belong to courts.”

Then shifted.

“Today I want to introduce someone.”

Elena had specifically told him not to.

So he didn't.

Instead:

“My sister is not a corporate symbol. Her life does not exist to improve Whitmore Global's narrative. Any announcement about her future will come from her.”

Elena watched livestream from kitchen.

“That was annoyingly decent.”

Vivian smiled.

“He does that occasionally.”

Grant returned home later.

Elena handed him beer.

“You called off wedding?”

“Yes.”

“Sorry.”

“Are you?”

“About wedding, yes. About Celeste, not particularly.”

Fair.

He sat.

“What will you do with trust?”

Elena had answer.

“Split purpose.”

A portion retained for security and future.

A portion restored to Whitmore voting structure with independent governance.

And a major portion would establish something unrelated to family corporate empire.

The Hart Initiative.

Named for Ruth and Thomas.

Its purpose:

fund long-term services for children emerging from foster care, trafficking, identity fraud, and disrupted adoptions—especially adults trying reconstruct sealed or falsified childhood records.

Grant looked.

“You're naming it after Harts.”

“Yes.”

Vivian entered.

“Good.”

Elena looked surprised.

Vivian:

“They gave you twenty-four years I couldn't.”

“Twenty-four?”

“Twenty-three-ish. Don't make me calculate. I'm eighty.”

They laughed.

Happy ending was approaching.

But one final question remained.

Marjorie Vale.

The nanny blamed for decades.

Her surviving daughter had lived with shame believing mother kidnapped child and died running away.

Elena wanted truth for her too.

And Preston was finally ready to talk.

Not from remorse.

Because prosecutors had evidence strong enough to keep him imprisoned for remainder life.

He wanted one thing.

A deal protecting Celeste from additional charges.

In exchange, he would tell them exactly what happened at lake twenty-four years earlier.

Elena agreed to hear him.

Not forgive.

May you like

Hear.
