Chapter 11 - The Metropolitan AmbushThere is a distinct difference between surviving a fire and learning how to control it.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art was bathed in dazzling, blinding light. The red carpet was swarming with hundreds of photographers, journalists, and the absolute apex predators of New York’s high society.
Vanessa Sterling was holding court on the museum steps, draped in a sheer, diamond-encrusted gown, playing the tragic heroine for the cameras. Her billionaire husband, Richard, stood beside her, looking smug and victorious.
The press was shouting questions about her new book, eagerly devouring the lies she had spun about the "monstrous" ex-wife who had ruined Daniel Vance.
Then, a sleek, black Maybach pulled up to the curb.
The whispers began instantly. When the door opened, the chaotic shouting of the paparazzi died into a stunned, absolute silence.
Daniel Vance stepped out first. He looked like an apex predator returning to his hunting grounds, wearing a flawless midnight-blue tuxedo. But instead of walking up the steps, he turned and held his hand out toward the car.
Liam stepped out, looking ruggedly handsome and entirely unfazed in a classic black suit.
And then, Liam offered his hand to the back seat.
Amy stepped onto the red carpet.
She did not wear a heavy, ostentatious gown. She wore a minimalist, sweeping dress of deep emerald silk that hugged her curves and flowed like liquid glass. Her hair was swept back into an elegant knot, and she wore no jewelry except the sapphire engagement ring on her left hand. She looked ethereal, untouchable, and utterly regal.
The flashing of the cameras erupted into a blinding strobe light.
Daniel walked on Amy’s left. Liam walked on her right. They moved up the stairs not as a fractured, scandalous love triangle, but as a united, impenetrable fortress.
Vanessa’s smug smile shattered the moment she saw them. She gripped Richard’s arm, her face draining of color. She had expected Amy to hide. She had expected Daniel to issue a sterile, corporate denial. She had never expected them to walk into her kingdom together.
As they reached the top of the stairs, a bold journalist shoved a microphone toward Amy.
"Amy! Vanessa’s book claims you extorted Daniel for millions and weaponized his daughter against him! How do you respond to the allegations?"
Vanessa watched, her eyes wide with malicious anticipation, waiting for Amy to crumble, to stutter, or to let Daniel fight her battle.
Amy stopped. She didn't look at Daniel. She didn't look at Liam. She looked directly into the camera lens.
"I think Vanessa is a brilliant fiction writer," Amy said, her voice clear, melodious, and echoing with absolute authority. "It takes a very creative mind to fabricate an extortion plot out of a completely amicable, uncontested divorce where I refused all alimony and simply went home to run a bookstore."
The press pool went dead silent.
"You stole his company's real estate!" Vanessa shrieked from the top of the stairs, losing her polished composure as the cameras swiveled toward her.
Amy slowly walked up the remaining steps, stopping just a few feet from Vanessa.
"I didn't steal anything, Vanessa," Amy smiled, a gentle, devastatingly polite expression. "I built a life. I am a small-business owner in Oregon. I am engaged to a brilliant architect. And Daniel and I successfully co-parent a beautiful daughter. There is no drama, no trap, and no scandal. The only tragedy here is that you felt the need to monetize a marriage you were never a part of."
Richard Sterling stepped forward, his face flushed with anger. "Listen here, you little gold-digger—"
Before Richard could finish his sentence, Daniel stepped smoothly in front of Amy, closing the distance between himself and his corporate rival.
"Choose your next words very carefully, Richard," Daniel rumbled, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying whisper that only they and the closest microphones could hear. "Because if you disrespect the mother of my child again, I won't just sue you for defamation. I will buy your board of directors tomorrow morning, liquidate your company, and turn your headquarters into a public parking lot."
Richard swallowed hard, physically taking a step back under the crushing weight of Daniel’s fury.
Amy placed a gentle hand on Daniel’s arm. He instantly stepped aside, deferring to her.

"We are here to support literacy and the arts," Amy addressed the press, her grace completely outshining Vanessa’s desperate display. She reached out and took Liam’s hand, lacing their fingers together. "Enjoy the fiction, everyone. We prefer reality."
With that, Amy, Liam, and Daniel walked past the humiliated couple and entered the gala, leaving Vanessa standing in the ashes of her own ruined narrative.
