Chapter 16 - The Unholy AllianceManhattan was a glittering, towering monument to ambition, a city where secrets were traded like currency and loyalty was always for sale.

Daniel sat in the dimly lit, ultra-exclusive VIP lounge of a speakeasy in Tribeca. The jazz music was a low, throbbing baseline in the background. He was wearing a flawless black suit, nursing a scotch he had no intention of drinking.

He checked his watch. 11:30 PM.

The velvet curtain parted, and a woman slid into the leather booth across from him.

It was Vanessa.

She looked significantly different than she had a year ago on the museum steps. The diamonds were smaller, the designer dress was a season old, and the arrogant, untouchable glow had been replaced by a sharp, desperate edge. Her divorce from Richard Sterling had been finalized three months ago, and Sterling had ruthlessly gutted her in the prenuptial settlement.

"You have a lot of nerve calling me, Daniel," Vanessa said coldly, signaling the waiter for a martini. "The last time we spoke, you threatened to turn my ex-husband’s company into a parking lot. A threat, I might add, that contributed to my current, deeply unpleasant financial situation."

"You did that to yourself, Vanessa," Daniel replied, completely devoid of empathy. "I didn't force you to write a fabricated book."

Vanessa scoffed, crossing her arms. "If you brought me here to gloat, you can go to hell."

"I brought you here for a transaction," Daniel said, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. "Richard is trying to build a mega-resort in Oregon with my mother. He is blackmailing Amy’s husband to force the sale of her property."

Vanessa’s eyes flared with a brief spark of surprise, followed quickly by a bitter, knowing smirk. "Classic Richard. He never could let a grudge go. But what does that have to do with me?"

"Richard is sloppy when he is arrogant," Daniel calculated, his voice dropping into a lethal, hypnotic rhythm. "He bribed a county commissioner to bypass the environmental impact studies. He had to move that money somehow. And since he doesn't trust digital ledgers for illegal payouts, he keeps physical insurance policies. Flash drives. Hard copies."

Vanessa froze. Her eyes darted away from Daniel’s for a fraction of a second. It was the only tell Daniel needed.

"You have it," Daniel breathed, a predatory smile touching the corner of his mouth. "You took his blackmail files before you moved out of the penthouse. You’ve been holding onto them for leverage to renegotiate your alimony."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Vanessa lied smoothly, picking up her freshly delivered martini.

"Vanessa," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Sterling is going to realize you have those files eventually. And when he does, he will destroy you. He will frame you for the embezzlement. But if you give those files to me, I will completely dismantle his firm by Friday. He will be facing federal prison. And you will be safe."

Vanessa took a slow sip of her drink, her mind racing. "And what’s in it for me, Daniel? Besides the satisfaction of watching Richard burn?"

Daniel reached inside his jacket and pulled out a cashier’s check. He slid it across the mahogany table.

Vanessa looked down. The number printed on the paper was staggering. Five million dollars.

"That is from my personal account," Daniel stated. "Untraceable to my former company. Enough for you to disappear to Paris, re-establish your social standing, and never have to think about Richard Sterling again."

Vanessa stared at the check. Her hand trembled slightly as she reached out, her manicured fingers brushing the heavy paper. She looked up at Daniel, seeing the absolute, terrifying lengths he was willing to go to protect the woman who had walked away from him.

"You really love her, don't you?" Vanessa whispered, a genuine, haunting sadness in her voice. "After everything... you’re paying millions just to protect her new husband."

"I am protecting my daughter’s home," Daniel corrected softly. "Do we have a deal?"

Vanessa unclasped her designer clutch. She reached inside and pulled out a small, encrypted silver flash drive. She placed it on top of the check and slid both toward Daniel.

"Richard keeps the decryption key in his mind," Vanessa said, standing up from the booth. "But with your resources, you can crack it in a day. The wire transfers, the bribes, the zoning manipulation... it’s all in there."

She paused, looking down at the man she had once tried to manipulate.

"Burn him to the ground, Daniel," she said, before turning and disappearing into the shadows of the club.

Daniel pocketed the drive. He pulled out his phone and dialed his elite team of private forensic accountants. The empire was about to strike back.
